I seen read this last night. I suggest everyone do the same. I cant
believe some of the statements, for example:: XX amount of game was
taken, but these numbers do not reflect poachers. They are
incorporating Hunters/Poachers as the same. Aslo, Bald Eagles are
killed by Hunters........Wrong!
Anyway Read it !!
I would like us all in this file to get together and somehow come up
with a standard letter to be sent by each of us to our Reps both Govt,
State and Local levels.
O.K. who's a good writer????????

601.2 | more con than pro | SALEM::MACGREGOR | | Wed Feb 07 1990 09:30 | 25 |
| I just got finished reading the article (my brother just returned
my magazine to me last night) and I am quite surprised by it. Also
I was kind of surprised by the number that supported hunting but
most did not participate (something like 80% supported but only
7% hunted). I was also surprised by Bush's comments on the subject.
It's kind of scary that someday hunting may well be banned, especially
if this kind of activity keeps up. But what really got me going
was Cleveland Amory's stats (one of 3 types of lies?) about 177
people getting killed and 1,719 getting injured. I broke this down
to percentages, .0011% got killed and .01074 got injured. It seems
to me that these mean hunting is one of THE safest (if not THE safest)
sports in the world. But one thing I liked about the article was
George Reiger (conservation editor for Field and Stream) was the
we (hunters) kill to hunt not hunt to kill. But what really irks
me is that because some people don't like hunting they try to stop
it. They don't care if other people like it or not. But I have noticed
it is not really the other way around. I don't see many of us doing
this to these activists. Maybe we should come up with a tax on these
Animal Rights activists in order to create a diversionary tactic
to make them spend there money elsewhere and not against us. Also
waht irked me was how alot of the hunter harrasment laws are being
struck down. What is it going to take for these people to realize
someone is going to get hurt real bad if they happen to jump in
front of an animal and get shot?

This morning (2/12/90), for the (3rd/4th...) Monday in a row,
WRKO radio from Boston has interview a spokesman from an animal
rights group.(I missed the name today)
The plan they SEEM to have is a low intensity, long term pressure
to "reform" hunting regulations. We know what the long term goal
is-total ban on the "inhumane" use of animals. The short term goal
is (IMHO) to get represention on the MASS. fish and wildlife board.
Right now they are interviewing a trapper-explaining his side very
rationally and clearly.

601.4 | Another bad rap ! | DNEAST::STEVENS_JIM | | Mon Feb 12 1990 09:41 | 13 |
| This place looked good for this little tid bit I heard coming
in this morning. Although this pertains to the shooting sport in
particular, I thought it interesting to put in here.
Yesterday, an 8 year old girl was killed when hit in the back by
a stray bullet. The girl was at Disneyland.. The report had little
details other than Police say the stray came from beyond the
boundary of Disneyland.
If I hear more, I'll post it here. I can hear all the anti's now !!

As a follow up to re.3
The rights group on the radio today is CEASE-I don't recall
what that stands for. He is debating the owner of Kakis Furs.
You may or may not be a supporter of the trapping industry, but
the bottom line from these people was pretty well summed up when
the guy from CEASE stated that he hadn't decided if it was O.K.
for the City of Boston to poison the rat population in the city.
The City has had a very agressiv plan to reduce the rat population
in order to head off potential problems with the proposed depression
of the Central Artery.
So far the Animal Rights people are coming off as a little whack-o
i.e. All of their spokes people have been against the use of
animals for ALL reasons including meat for food. However, they are
becoming more and more sophisticated in their attacks.
Even IF you don't trap, the hunter and fisherperson are under
the same attack, and you cannot allow the anti to divide and conquer.
