554.0. "'TINKS 69"...any good ??" by DECXPS::PAYNTER () Thu Nov 16 1989 14:25

    HAS ANYONE HAD ANY LUCK WITH 'TINKS 69 '. I've
    been told buy gun shops that it's the best on the
    market, and i'm curious as to how good it really is.
    Please advise.

              Thanks
                      Steve

554.1go with Foggy MountainSALEM::MACGREGORI'm the NRA/GONH/NAHCThu Nov 16 1989 14:418
    A few weeks ago there was a show on scents and they especially singled
    out Tinks. They said it was a fraud. The reason being was they needed
    over 360 deer in rut every day to be able to produce all the scent
    that they make. Come to find out they only have 30 on their farm.
    But they also talked alot about the other scents. If there was a
    scent to be trusted I would go with Foggy Mountain. I think they
    are a more reputable business than Tinks. Just my $.02.

    I just thought thgat I would add that I think all of them are not
    really very reliable. When deer are in rut maybe they may work but
    if the rut ends I don't think they would make any difference. I
    myself would not waste my money on the stuff.
    						Just my $.02 again

554.3THE MOST EXPENSIVE SCENT ON THE MARKETMTADMS::GEIBELFri Nov 17 1989 08:5228

       I just wanted to add that I totaly agree that if the deer arent
    in rut then a doe in heat scent is useless and the deer know when
    the breeding season is in full bore.
        I have used TINKS for 13 years and have shot several bucks over
    the 35MM film container with it (TINK) in it, I have even had bucks roll
    the container around with their noses BUT you have to be awfull
    carefull where you set the scent and when you set it, EX; if you
    have been seeing does from your stand and the rutting season has
    started I would be very carefull with setting the scent out since
    if a doe isnt ready to breed and she smells that she is going to
    bolt and if there was a buck there he wont stick around.

       I have the best luck early in the evening with using scent since
    the thermal currents hold the scent down and allways pay close
    attention on the down wind side of your stand but I have also seen
    a mature buck circle the scented area also to find the doe.

         With all the scents I have seen used I owuld have to say TINKS
    is # 1 in my book the only draw back is the price and listening
    to the wife when she opens one of the film containers......ooooooh
    that stuff is nasty.......but honey it works!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

                                           GOOD LUCK
                                                    Lee

    I think "69" is good only if the buck is interested in oral sex.

554.5that was a good oneMTADMS::GEIBELMon Nov 20 1989 11:2615
    RE .4

         That was a good one, but as far as Im concerned I dont care
    what he is interested in as long as he's not interested in where
    my stand is.

                                       From experience #69 works great...

    a couple of weeks ago on tv, i saw one of those hunting shows and
    they performed an experiment about scents.

    they dumped a bottle of aqua velvet aftershave, moved over about
    15 yards dumped some ammonia, ( scents are ammonia based i think
    they said ) moved over another 15 yard and dumped a bottle of
    human urine. ( thats right. human urine)

    anyway they watched from a blind, they showed the does were restless
    and snorting and moving away, however the bucks were drawn over
    to the area of the scents.

    guess what, they went directly over to the human urine.
    and started tasting it, ( the narator explained that the deer has
    to taste the urine to find some chemical that identifies as doe
    urine)

    there were about 3 bucks checking it out.

    so save your money, either drink alot of fluids the nite before
    of pee in a bottle and bring it with you.

    Last week when a bunch of us were hunting New Brunswick,Canada the
    guide told us one of the hunters was using Tinks and a real nice
    10 pointer came in on the scent with its nostrils flared and mouth
    open. The buck was shot 19 paces from the stand.

554.10One got away because of TinksMLFS1::BERKELEYTue Nov 21 1989 15:0211

    Well one got away. I had just taken my stand when I decided to use my
    Tinks. I walked over to two areas to put the canisters down and as I
    was walking back to my stand, out of the corner of my eye I saw a deer
    duck down and go behind the ridge.

    If I had just stayed on my stand 2 minutes longer I would have had one.

    I think that once you are on your stand stay put.

    OH well!!!!
