550.0. "beamed up by aliens?" by FSCORE::KAYE (He who dies with the most toys is dead) Tue Nov 14 1989 11:50

Where did they go???

On Sunday, Nov 5, my buddy was moose hunting an area just north of our
normal area and came across 7 fresh beds on a knoll (it had snowed a
bit, so he knew they were fresh). It was about 14:00 so he couldn't do
much about it. On Friday, Nov 10 we were in the area sneakin around in
the rain & sleet. There were a couple of tracks that were fresh, but
no sign of all the moose. The next day was snow/rain and 3 of us
combed the area again - not a track. Sunday was sunny & cold with some
fresh snow again - not a track. We covered about 6 sq. kms.
The area is high hardwood hills/deep ravines with pine scattered
throughout. They had browsed a stretch on 1 hillside for about 1 1/2
kms the previous week, but we never found any fresh browse. So, where
did they go & why?

Almost tempted to rent a plane and check it out...

In Northern Ontario, about 20 miles north of Mattawa, which is 3 1/2 hrs
north of Toronto. The season runs from Oct 7 to Nov 15. Adults are draw
only, everyone gets to shoot a calf.

    Mark,

I always had a hankering to get up there someday. Is this anywhere
close to Hudson Bay? What are the lic fees for aliens ? Would I need
a guide by law ? How are the caribou or are you too south ? What other
    game is available ?

As you can see I'm full of questions. Ive been to Montreal, Toronto,
and Kanata on Digital business and personal pleasure as well.

I must say, You have a most beautiful country and I'm always ready to
return. The people are very nice and your citys and towns very clean.

    Thanks,

Rick (I live in southern New Hampshire.)

550.4non-resident infoFSCORE::KAYEHe who dies with the most toys is deadWed Nov 15 1989 12:5417
Thanx for the compliments, we sorta like up here too.

Non-resident moose license is CDN$200. However, it looks like you need
a validation sticker supplied by the outfitter, that seems to imply you
have to register with an outfitter. The exceptions are property owners in
a particular area, or hunting with immediate family that are residents.

I'm in Kanata, and our hunting area is 3 hrs west of Ottawa (slightly north),
and a long way from Hudsons Bay. People do hunt way up north, but i've never
figured out why, cus there are lots of moose a lot closer. I used to hunt
near Cochrane which is 6 hrs north of the area i hunt now (just too far).

We passed up on 3 cows, cus we only had 2 bull tags (for different areas).
Stop in & i can show you some videos of removing & skinning the unlucky
moose (always looking for a captive audience)...

Thanks for the reply and invite. Next time I'm up on business I'll look
you up. I'll take you for a long lunch as I'm sure the conversation will
    be long.

    Good-Luck Hunting,,
