549.1 | Deer stealers.... | BTOVT::MORONG | | Mon Nov 13 1989 13:02 | 6 |
| Wow, thats the longest sentence I have ever read!!! ;-)
Too bad about the 11 pointer. Some "hunters" can be such
idiots. How big was the deer you ended up getting???

Why would anyone want game they did not take? I honestly belive that
if I did something like that, the Great-Sprit would put a hex on me for
life.
Besides, I Don't want someone elses deer. I'll shoot it myself or take
nothing at all Thank You.

Well sorry for the long sentence but once I get rabling on about
what happened I get madder than h*ll,
The deer I ended up with was a 105 lb. 4 point 10.5" wide and
10.25 high and 6.75 from tip-tip in the front a nice even gallon
rack for a 1.5 year deer.

549.4 | Nice little basket-rack... | BTOVT::MORONG | | Mon Nov 13 1989 14:06 | 7 |

I was only kidding about the sentence.
Nice rack for a 4-pointer!!! But not as nice as the 11-pointer
would have been. Congrats.

Lee,
I assume you tried talking to the guys. Me, personally, I really
think I would have laid my gun down and had a round with those boys,
no matter how big they were. THEY STOLE YOUR BUCK! I can't believe
why anyone would want to do that, I really feel bad for you! Good
consolation prize though -

| Lee, if I read your note correctly, you shot the first deer
(11-pointer) with a shotgun. If these other two bozos had rifles I
would think it would have been a fairly simple matter to determine who
shot what at the registration station by following them there. No?

| I had the same thing happen to me with one of the people in my hunting
party! He fired at the deer and said he hit it. So I asked him too
show me his brand of slug, and I pulled out mine. We then gutted the
deer and searched for the slug, it turned out to match my slug. So he
apologized and helped me drag the deer out of the woods.

Maybe having the Game Warden come along would be a good idea! I
believe that if you feel that you are right, especially if it is a
large deer, I would take the chance. Just my opinion....

| We were told in the hunter safety course out here in colorado to fill
out the tag, drag the animal out and then put the tag on it. That way
the tag doesn't get torn off or lost.

| I once heard a story about a young guy who was on his first hunt.
He bags a buck and can't drag it out by himself. He filler out his
tag and put the tag inside the bucks mouth. Then went to find his
uncle to help with the drag. They returned to find the deer gone.
They went to the way station and there was the deer. Two other hunters
had claimed it. The boy and his uncle called the game warden over
and told their story. The bucks jaw saw broken open to find the
boys tag. The two hunters were arrested. To saving grace was that
the deer had been gutted by the boy.

| Well, just to add to the jist of this note, Saturday, up near Peterboro
a friend and I were hunting when what do we find? A 4 point buck.
Dead. Field dressed. And hidden in pine boughs.
Seems like someone shot it the night before, and covered it upto
come back and get the next night. Some critters j=found it and
dragged it out from under the pines, and chewed it up pretty good.
We called the game warden, and he said he was going to post someone
there to see if he could get the guys that did it. Dont know if
he did, but if so, I hope they hang'em by the b*lls.

549.14 | Too late to drag??? | BTOVT::MORONG | | Tue Nov 21 1989 09:28 | 9 |
| Perhaps they got the deer late in the day and didn't want to
drag after dark. I don't find that all that unusual. I always
hear of hunters shooting a deer one day, and going back the next
day to get it. Maybe the fact that they field dressed it makes it
sound suspicious, but I wouldn't jump to any conclusions. Too bad
the critters got to it though. Unless the warden can prove that it
was shot illegally (after dark?), what can he do???

I'm pretty sure in NH you have to notify a game warden if you leave
a deer in the woods overnight. Also that deer should have been tagged
if it was taken lawfully.

RE .14 the fish & game can tell by tests the exact time of death
and its acurate to the quarter hour.
As far as leaving the deer overnight in the woods I would not
leave a deer in the woods not with all the cyote's and dogs that
are running around.

| The same holds true for Maine as in .15...
But, I would never leave a deer in the woods overnight either....Too
many cayotes and DISHONEST hunters.....
I carry 5 or 6 yards of orange tape, a flashlight and a map. I'm sure
I could find the deer in the dark..I have in the past (not mine).
It is snowing like a mother outside...Winds over 50mph....Those deer
are laying down today and will be again tonight...I'm gone tommorow
morning again for the rest of the season.....I feel a big buck is
in the offering..

549.18 | For What It's Worth | MAIL::HENSON | | Tue Nov 21 1989 12:42 | 12 |
| I once had to leave an elk overnight because I shot it too late
in the day to drag it out. I draped several articles of my
clothing on and around the kill and also "christened" the immediate
area with a fair amount of urine (mine).
When I returned the next day, the elk had not been bothered. I
also moved the carcass some distance from where I had dressed it.
This was in an area in Central Utah which has a sizeable bear and
mountain population. I don't know if this would work on dogs or
coyotes.

Jerry,
Sorry I couldn't help myself.....was that urine or tinks...and what
did you write in the snow to keep the critters away ;^}?
Seriously though, I've heard that human scent will in fact keep
game away. (i.e. some of the sporting goods catalogs use to sell
jugs for carrying out urine, because the scent would drive the game
away). In fact alot of the scents on the market are for masking
human scent (i.e. pine, skunk etc.)

549.21 | I depends where you are. | GENRAL::BOURBEAU | | Tue Nov 21 1989 13:44 | 8 |
| Elk are often gutted out and left overnight in the Rockies, since
there are many places there that it would be very dangerous, due to
the terrain, to try to drag it, or even carry quarters out in the dark.
A party near us this season, did leave three ,at different times,
for the next day. They apparently didn't lose much meat. I guess it
depends where you're hunting.

| It seems to me that the deer should have been tagged (in accordance with the
law), that the warden should have been summoned (I didn't know about this law),
and that the hunter should have hung the deer from a tree so the animals
couldn't get it (assuming that he couldn't go back and get it at night).

549.23 | not by choice | FSCORE::KAYE | He who dies with the most toys is dead | Wed Nov 22 1989 20:19 | 8 |
| We have left many a moose overnite (shot near dusk & gutted) with no
problems. The wolves are a constant threat, but there is no way you
can do anything with a moose 1 1/2 miles back in the bush in the dark.
I have never left a deer, and as another noter, carry orange tape and
a flashlight just in case. It's not something i like doing, but in
some cases there isn't any choice.

As an aside to this note, there is a talk show on this morning
that seems to have an "all hunters are drunks" slant to it.
If you have access to an AM radio, in the E.Mass area
and want to get ticked off, tune in 'RKO. It's their annual
First Day of Hunting Season show, and there is a lot of BS
flyin'.....on both sides.
