are alot of farms and coal mines there is everything from big
pole timber plots to old overgrown fields and orchards.
EXCELENT DEER HABITAT and also the wild turkey population has
exploded in the last 10 years, we saw or heard turkeys every day

Quite a few people that I know go to Pa. and are very succesful.
Last week I had my bow stolen from me but when they caught the guys
they knew how to find me because of the name and address that is
required by the state of N.H. But that is besides the point, while
I was in the police station a couple of officers that I was talking
to had just come from there and were telling me how succesful they
were with bows. Also the lead electrician here at Salem went down
there and also was very succesful. Sounds like I will have to try
and get down there next year, once I get my bow back that is. They
are holding it for evidence. Hopefully I'll get it back soon.

Hey Bob, I would really like to check the place out. But at the
moment I can't afford a new bow and everything is contingent on
me getting my bow back soon, and if those SOB's happen to plead
not guilty it may take up to a couple of years. Have to wait and
see. It's a good thing I didn't have the money earlier and had bought
a new bow. Oh well talk to you later.................................

I just found the stats. They are located in hunting note 363.3
The total hunter kill was 6125. And this year looks to be alot better.
The total kill was 7082. I bet the hunter kill will top that. I
hope to be one of those numbers. This is for N.H.

I'm from Tarentum, Pa, currently residing in Pembroke, N.H. and have
hunted most of the western and northern parts of PA. Let me tell you,
there is no place on God's green earth that can rival the beauty of that
state. My wife didn't believe me the first time she visited PA. that
you can't drive any great distance through the state without seeing a deer.
It's damn near impossible. And if you did manage to miss seeing one its
only because your so entranced by your surroundings. Am I home sick? You
better believe it! Give me the Allegheny Mountains and that gorgeous river
valley any day. It's a sportmans paradise.

    Keith,

Seeing as though you're an ex-Penn-er and now a NH-er - how would you
"deer" compare the two, i.e; give each state a ranking from 1 to 10 (when
you're ranking NH you can use a negitive............).

What about other PA hunting, specifically pheasant?

When you did time in PA, how did you do?

    Thanks

Re: -.12

Dan,

In my opinion there is no comparison between deer hunting in PA as versus
NH. PA would rate a 10 and NH, well, its bound to improve with better game
management. I'm holding out hope for NH, some of the game management
principles the state game commision has adopted over the past couple of
years are certainly a step in the right direction, however, I believe more
needs to be done before we see a significant increase in the deer
population.

As for Pheasant hunting in PA, it was always pretty good. The farm areas
in and around Allegheny, Butler, and Armstrong County were always my
favorite places for any upland game. Armstrong county especially. Lots of
corn fields and low lying brushy areas. Great place for birds.

Let's GO! I'm from Erie, with cousins from Warren to W.Va.

I took up bow hunting senior year in college (Lehigh U.) in
PA. I must have made every mistake in the book because I missed
plenty of opportunities that first year. For example, one my first
day hunting in PA I took a shot at a coyote, walked into a herd
of bedded deer (20) and just missed a deer at 15 yards at dusk while
    still hunting.

After getting a new bow and plenty practice over the winter,
I bagged a deer on my first morning in PA. I've spent many morning's
in NH with no luck since. I feel lucky to see sign in NH. Definitely
requires a 'real hunter' + plenty of time + close location + luck.

Another PA native now in NH,

I never thought it would happen but now when
I see a deer when I'm driving or hiking around NE I stop to
gawk at them. I remember thinking how silly all the people from
Ny and NJ were when they did back home. (Imagine stopping a car
to stare at deer eating grass.) In NH they are so rare during
the day. Hey I don't even see rabbits dart accross the road,
in fact the only small game in NH is the stuff that hangs out
    	by the bird feeder.
Well I do kick out a grouse every now and then
when I take a walk behind our house. It would be nice to see
deer from the breakfast table in the morning again. My wife
doesn't miss having the spotting scope set up on the tripod
in the dinning room I'll bet. (Maybe she misses seeing them too)

There hasn't been any entrys in here for a long time. What day does
bow season in Pa. start this year? From reading previous replys it should
be Sept. 28th. A couple of friends and I have the use of a buddys camp the
second week of bow season. Also does Pa. require you to have taken a hunters
safety course? One of my buddy's just start hunting last year and hasn't
taken a course yet. Would hate to get there to find out he can't get a licence.

Well I just got off the phone with the girl at franklin headquarters
and the bow season for PA starts OCTOBER 5 1991 till NOVEMBER 1 its
being held 1 week later than normal so that you have more hunting days
during the rutting period. I love it us bow hunters get first chances
at harvesting a grand trophy with a bow and arrow.

My vaca starts oct 11-18 but I may be changeing it but then again 5
out of the 9 deer I have gotten with the bow have been taken on
10-16-91 and of those 5, 4 were shot at exactly 6:00pm and all from the
same tree stand and all on the same trail ( I love a predictible stand)

I have heard nothing but good reports on the deer herd this year I
still go to PA every other month for a visit and when I go I spend 1/2
my time in the woods scouting/taking pictures, heck its almost as much
of a challange to get animals on film.

The turkey's are everywhere this year thanks to the extremely dry
late spring this year, my mom had a flock of 30 birds in the yard in
july they were catching bugs in her garden she wasnt pleased at all..
she said there are so many turkeys they are running around like
    chickens.

Should be excellent hunting in PA this year. and I will really enjoy
hunting here in NY state also.

In PA you do need a hunter safety certificate / card unless you have
a previous hunting license from any state.

             Happy hunting to all

Can you post any phone numbers you have for F+W departments in Pa.
Since this is our first time hunting in Pa., it would be nice to have
a number. In case we need any other questions answered.
I know what you mean about withdrawels. When my Uncle was living
in Pa. about 10 years ago. I remeber going to see him for Thanksgiving.
There were deer everywhere off the side of the road. Haven't been there
in about 10 years though. How big do the deer in Pa. get?

Saw a few more notes on the new HO law

the new regs don't take effect until the 1992 season which means
that spring turkey hunters should not need HO this spring. (pa season
    runs August to August)

The HO is only required by MOVING turkey hunters. This means if
you sit down and start calling you can remove the HO but if you get up
to move, you must put it back on.

Hello,

Well My hunting buddys and myself got some bad news last night.
The hunting camp we were at last year and already have a down payment on
for this year is unavailable for the week we already reserved. Talk about
being pissed off, we better not meet up with the owner in person. Close
friends of his wants the camp the first week of bow season Oct. 5th - 9th,
so he bumped us to the 3rd week. Problem is some of us have vacation time
reserved and can't change it.
So for anybody who knows of any camps available for the first
week of bow season, or names and numbers of motels. Can you please either
post here or send me mail. Were looking anywhere from North Central to
North West PA., especially Potter, Butler, and Warren counties.
Also if anybody knows of any camps for sale send me mail. During
this trip we planned on seriously looking for a camp of our own to buy.

Thanks,

Ron

Thats good news. We haven't recieved either our doe or our bonus
tags back yet. Haven't recieved any rejection notices either. We
had them in as early as [possible without being too early]. Hopefully
we'll get them. Spent Labor day scouting. Saw eight deer in
fields and lots of sign. Can't wait for bow season. Started shooting
    last night. Come on fall!

I could have sworn that I got my antlerless deer tag by now in
years past.

Are they holding them for some reason ???? Why is the 21st of
Sept significant ?

Maybe I'm just getting a little over anxious about this years
trip. I can't wait till it's time to shish-ka-bob one of those
brown little buggers.

Well that is great news.... I talked to mom yesterday she saw 3
bucks in the hollow behind the house! she said they walked right by my
tree I was perched in last fall so I guess maybe I will put up another
    stand there again.

I am getting psyched, I hope to get there this weekend cause all my
cammies are there and they need washed and uv treated again and I want
to drain the camper since tis the season for cold nights and the last
thing I wanna be doin is plumbing work on vaacation! so it will be a
    get ready for season trip.

I returned from a wonderfull weekend in Pa. I arrived at camp
friday night, got everything hooked up and turned on the power, had to
clean up after a field mouse that had a fettish for kleenex's!! man
they sure can make a big mess for such little critters.

Saturday morning I was gone before first light, went out to the
bcak hollow and set, saw 2 deer ~20 yrds, 2 grouse, too many squirells
to count, it wont be fun hunting there because of them.
I headed over to shernocks farm to check out the crop damage report
and boy I feel bad for this guy, the deer are bad enough but man the
bears are ruining the corn fields, some times farmers exagerate about
damage but I say the fields first hand and he aint lyin! I saw at least
30 acres of decimated corn field, he started to grind silage yesterday
he said he planted early since he was really hit hard the first 2 weeks
of oct. last year, and he could pick earlier this fall to try and save
    some of his crops.
I walked just about all of the ~400 acres, and man I seen cow pasture
with fewer scat piles! and to tell you the truth there was so much sign
I aint real sure where I wanna put up stands. saw many deer, I walked
up on a sleeping doe got to about 6 yards and I said hey you better
sleep a little lighter, she was instantly on her feet but just stood
there looking at me like where the heck did you come from, she just
walked away!! ( I was in UV treated camo's) time was 10:30 am.

Headed for the sports shop to get some goodies, still had some
xmas club money there from last year plus this years so man it was like
sending a kid in a candy store, yeap I want one a these, one a these,
one a these, yeap I been wantin one a these, denny finally said hey we
dont have shoppin carts here. but the best part was sayin just take it
    off the xmas club.

Took all my goodies to camp and set up some new target arrows, its
now pouring rain but I wanted to shoot so I shot from the garage and
just had to run back and forth to the target, but I got the bow
readjusted to the new arrows and now I use one pin out to 20 yards and
the arrows are flying really nice, so I went back out that evening in
the rain and even say deer then.

Went spotting was foggy as all get out but we saw some deer almost
got a 4pt with the truck, actually it almost got the truck it jumped
off the bank from a cornfield if he would of waited 2 seconds he would
of hit me right in the door!

Sunday morning I woke up about freezin my cahonies off, man I knew
I should of turned on the furnace, brrrrrrr I headed for fiddlers run
hollow, to get there ya gotta go through conner hollow, saw 8 deer
before I even got to fiddlers run, man I like that hollow, I spooked
some deer out in fiddler run, and had about a 10 minute stand off with
a big ole coon, that was kinda unnerving but he finally left and I
gave him plenty of room to go back to what he was doin!

once I got to the end of fiddler run hollow I walked the road back
cursing my once waterproof boots that at the time had more water in
them than on them! as I am walking the road I look up on the bank and
there is a big doe looking at me about 10 yards away! I just kept
walking, she didnt even run as a matter of fact I hear her hooves on
the gravel and when I turned around she was walking across the raod
    behind me!

I got back to camp and changed, and Pat and I went back over to
shernocks farm, walked the river hill at the bottom it took almost 20
minutes to get down the hill, these river hills are almost straight up
and straight down! the only way to walk them without ropes is a deer
trail that cuts down the hill diagonally even then you have to be very
carefull not to slip, if you do you wont stop till you get to the
bottom unless your lucky enough to hit a tree on the way to the bottom.
I told pat that if you'd put up a tree stand you step on the tree about
30 feet up and if go 12 feet above the trail your stand would be close
to 60 feet off the ground on the back side of the tree! we saw 5 deer
as we were walking and once we made the 45 minute climb back up over
the hill we watched 8 turkeys in the field for about 10 minutes before
we snuck back off the field to let them alone. we bounced out several
more deer on the way back to the truck.

we returned to camp and I got everything packed up and squared away
and headed for home at 5:30pm. after doing more shooting last night
with field points and broadheads the bow is shooting great, and I am
really psyched I can hardly wait till next saturday!! the days are just
creeping by! I should have all my stands set by next friday afternoon.

                                                                  Lee

Well, they haven't kicked me off the tube yet!!! Got my bonus tag in
the mail yesterday. That means both my buddy and I got antlerless and
bonus tags for PA. this year. We leave on the 5th for God's Country
(Potter County for the unenlightened 8*). Talked with my friends who
own the farm and there seeing lots of deer and an unbelievable amount
of turkeys. Have seen a bunch of different bucks. They said that the
apple crop is spotty, meaning some trees are loaded but most are bare.
This usually helps to concentrate the deer a bit more. I'd rather have
it spotty, then all or nothing. When all the trees are loaded its harder
to pattern the deer. When only a relatively few trees have fruit, you
know where the deer will be. Got my new stand from bowhunters WH
yesterday. This gives me a climber and a fixed, along with the stick
    ladder. Good luck to all.

Well it looks as tho a good thing may come to an end!!!

I received the Pa game news last and was most disspleased with the
license fee increase that has been proposed to the Pennsylvania
    sportsmen!

I have called to voice my opinion on this matter, and have contacted
the actual game commission to get them to help in the fight to lower
    the proposed non resident increase.

      the proposal as follows;

    			this year	next year
    regular license	80.75 130.75
    archery stamp	5.75 30.75
    doe license 5.75 20.75
    bonus doe tag	5.75 20.75
    -----------------------------------------------
my total this year $98.00 $203.00

its gonna be mighty difficult to justify $203 for hunting in 1 state
that doesnt allow sunday hunting, that was one of the points that were
brought up to me "well Mr. Geibel our archery season is 6 weeks long,
not many other states have an archery season that long" my response was
ok now lets look at this 6 week season not as its writen on paper but
as 2 individuals that are hunting, we have 6 weeks, so since we are NOT
allowed to hunt on sundays that means that your 6 week season is only 5
weeks worth of huntable days correct? "well yes sir if thats the way
you want to look at it" i said well YES thats how it is, heck if i take
a weeks vacation to hunt there i cant hunt for 2 days out of that week!

I just find that doubling the fee a bit overkill, i think there
will be a huge decrease in nonresident hunting! and the lack of non
resident hunters is going to put more hurt on an already shakey economy
    in the commonwealth of Pa.

The next sceduled meeting is sept 18th at the huntington area high
school, its a week day but i may just drive down there to voice my
    opposition in person.

to voice opposition to representitive Bruce Smith call 717-783-8783

the resident licenses are also doubling! but 50.00 for all the tags
listed above isnt as bad as 203.00!!

                                              Lee
