535.0. ".270 trajectory..." by BTOVT::REMILLARD_K () Fri Nov 03 1989 12:49

    I need an answer to this fairly quickly....going out to the range
    this weekend...

    Basically what is the trajectory of a 130 gr. in the .270 caliber?
    I use to have this information, but can't seem to track it down.
    So if any of you .270 wizards have the info. handy, I'd appreciate
    you posting it. I couldn't find it anywhere in this file or Firearms.

    I'm looking to be in the kill range primarily from 0 - 100 yds,
    possibly low (or right on) at 50 and a bit high at 100 seems about right...
    but I'd like to know what the books say.

    thanks in advance,

    Kevin

535.1And here's the answerBAGELS::MONDOUFri Nov 03 1989 13:1312
    According to my Remington catalog:

    With the rifle sighted in at 150 yards and using 130 gr. Pointed
    Soft Point Core-Lokt, from a 24" barrel:

    50   yards    0.5
    100  yards    0.8
    150 yards     0.0
    200 yards    -2.0
    250 yards    -5.5
    300 yards   -10.4

535.2According to FederalSALEM::MACGREGORI'm the NRA/GONH/NAHCFri Nov 03 1989 13:3615
    according to federal:

    	sighted in for 100 yds. sighted in for 200 yds.
    	50 yds.  -0.2"				50 yds.   +0.5"
    	100 yds.  0.0"				100 yds.  +1.5"
    	200 yds. -2.9"				200 yds.   0.0"
    	300 yds. -11.2"				300 yds.  -6.8"
    						400 yds.  -20.0"
    						500 yds.  -41.1"

    This is for supposedly ideal conditions which are 59 degrees F,
    barometric pressure of 29.53 inches and at sea level. Also with
    a 24 inch barrell. Good shooting.

    .0 what ammunition are you using?
535.6point blank rangeMAIL::HENSONFri Nov 03 1989 13:5722
    Kevin,

    I've been shooting a .270 for about 13 years and I always sight
    my rifle to shoot 1" high at 100 yds. The problem with sighting
    in at 150 or 200 is finding a range. With this sighting, I've
    killed deer from 20 ft to 300 yds. I hold at the top of the
    back for the 300 yd. shots.

    Jack O'Connor advocated sighting in ANY rifle to shoot 3" high
    at 100 yds. This is to give you an effective point blank range
    of somewhat more than 100 yds (depends on your cartridge). If
    you sight in your .270 to shoot 3" high at 100 yds, you will
    probably not shoot more than 5 inches high or low at ranges from
    0 to 350 yds. This will allow you to hold in the middle of the
    kill area and hit it at any range out to 300 yds (assuming 10"
    kill area).

    Guns and Ammo (I think) has a magazine out devoted entirely to
    deer rifles. There are several excellent articles about bullet
    trajectory.

    KEVIN,

    Ditto what Jerry just said...

    After reading all of Jack O'Connors writings, it makes perfect sense to
    sight in this way, therefore your never more or less than 4" from the
    line of sight all the way out to 325 yards, with a hold on the edge of
    the back at 400 yds still giving you a hit into the vitals. makes it
    easier to remember also...

    I have mine sighted in for:

    BORE 25yds   100 yds   150yds   200yds   275yds   300yds   325yds  375yds

535.8sight in at 50 yardsSALEM::MACGREGORI'm the NRA/GONH/NAHCFri Nov 03 1989 14:196
    .6 I know the problem of finding a range long enough to sight in
    at long distances thats why I will find out where the placement
    will be high at 50 yards and sight it in for that, such as 1 or
    2 inches high at 50 yards. Depending on what the shooter is sighting
    in at. Good shooting................................................

535.9Fed. Premium...BTOVT::REMILLARD_KFri Nov 03 1989 14:377

    I'm using Federal Premium, 130 gr. soft point, boat tails..., again

    me at the range this weekend...

535.10Boattails are slightly differentSALEM::MACGREGORI'm the NRA/GONH/NAHCFri Nov 03 1989 14:5315
    Mr. Remillard, the ballistics are just a bit different for boat
    tails.

    	sighted for 100 yds. sighted for 200 yds.
    	50     -0.2"			50    +0.5"
    	100     0.0"			100   +1.4"
    	200    -2.8"			200    0.0"
    	300    -10.7"			300   -6.5"
    					400  -19.0"
    					500  -38.5"

    This also according to Federal but their Premium Ammunition that
    you will be using along with all of the same variables that I had
    mentioned in a previous reply. Again Good Shooting. Bret

    	Hey Kevin, I like 18 to 20 yard shots myself :')

    You just better make sure you can hit at 12 yards!!!!!!
    I don't want to hear any more of those "miss" stories.

    good luck, Rob

    		Low at 12 yards, that should get you a spine

    see ya and good luck again!

535.13give me the 150 gr. thank youBTOVT::ALEXANDERTue Nov 07 1989 16:096
    Kevin, I have used my .270 for almost 17 years now and I have used only
    the 150 gr shells. My uncle tried the 130 gr one year and he said he
    was very unimpressed with them (claims they either blow up or are
    thrown off course by brush). I am very happy with the 150 gr. and
    sight in at 25 yds, thus putting a shot at 100 yds so damn close it
    dosen't matter to me.
