    RE:2 "New Hampshire"

Ahhhh, do you really think someone is gonna tell ya. If you wanna
go gunning, you'll just have to do some studying. Get some topo
maps and study Hillsboro county, thats the best this here native
of N.H. can do for ya.

Seriously, N.H. has a lot to offer, very little restricted land,
You can hunt in this state just about anywhere common sence dictates.
also it seems, we are the unknown known
to the general hunting public when it comes to 200+lb deer. Most
hunters head to Maine, but we have a few wide racked bucks running
    these hills as well.

I suggest you get a topo of the county mentioned, throw your wife
and kids in the car and take a ride up there to look around. This
time of year with the colors, fairs and harvest time will make an
enjoying time for the family and let you take a looksee as well.

Or if you have no wife and kids then throw you shotgun in the car
and get yourself up there os often as possible before the season
opens. You can go gunning for partridge and scout the same time.

Once you look around, I know you'll say to yourself, "Well I'll
be a suck ass mule that there Rick was right and I can't wait to
    go gunning for deea, AYupp!!

    Good-Luck,
     Rick

I dunno, Rick. It would probably be to your avantage to tell some of us
neophytes where to go- then you could just sit and we'd scare the deer
    right to ya. :-)

I understand where .2 is coming from. I have very little idea where to
even look for big deer. I see some tracks and all, but not that many
really big ones. What type of habitiat should we be looking for?

I'd be happy with some general information like what to look for. I
don't need to know your special place. Having fished for many years, I
am in no big hurry to disclose my best spots either.

Since I am just getting into deer hunting, and since it's been a long
while since I read up on it, I'd kinda like a few pointers. One thing I
have been doing is watching the results of the trophy deer awards
putout by the state. There are some really big deer in NH. (Many seem
to come from the Pittsburg area.)

How about helping a neophyte out?

    RE:4

Well I'll tell ya, I'm not a modest man but I will say this, Ive
been hunting deer for 22 years and I still consider myself in the
learning stage, of all the game hunted, the Whitetail is like a
women, Just when you have them figured out, they change everything, but
like a women, we can out-reason them. Am I treading on thin ice
    here? (ha,ha,ha,)

Anyway, You ask what type of habitiat should you look for? Now being
a member of this file for some time The best thing I can say is
it all depends on the area your hunting, Deer it seems will adapt
to many things but the basics are Food,Water, and Shelter(a good
hiding place) its just something you'll have to read up on and get
out there and give it a try. Stay away from the BIG-Timber, try
lowlands and farm country to begin with. Study the area you plan
to hunt. Try to put yourself between bedding and feeding areas and
be prepared to sit, sit, sit and get cold, bored, curious(Whats over
there, over here) and by all means don't sit there moving around
like a dog shiting razor blades, keep your movement little and look
as far into the woods as you can see, look for parts of deer not
the whole deer. There is so much to know and consider I could go
on and on. This file has some excellent hunters with all kinds of
theorys none wrong and none right its just one of those things you
have to master on your own.

Don't overlook them Grass Swamps and if you see an area so thick
and you say no way i'm going in there, hmmmm think again.
Bring yourself LOTS of PATIENCES, this comes with experience.

And when you walk thru the woods,Please don't walk like your going
thru a shopping mall. Walk like a deer, 2 to 3 steps and stop for
a few minutes, look, listen, always move to a tree or bush to break-up
your outline, imagine your a deer and act like one, in reality your
    a preditor.

Remember, If a deer in N.H. steps out of the Hemlocks, Its lost,by
this I mean hunting deer in N.H. is no picnic, the key to a good
deer hunter is to be consistent while respecting the game and others
to the highest degree. Studying,Scouting, is lots of work, But the
Deer deserves this respect more than you bringing home the bacon.

    Good-Luck!!
     Rick
506.6NH - HillsboroDEMING::TOPELFri Oct 13 1989 12:5321
    Thanks for the reply..........

First on the NH deer.... I know someone who last year did all his
deer hunting within five miles of home and home is in Brookline NH...
AND...... after no luck with the black powder...... and "regular"
rifle started... was able to knock down a buck - again within five
miles of home.......... Bottom "deer" line - there ARE deer in NH.

    Back to the ducks..
I do have a "local" topo map of the Brookline/Mason/Milford area - It's
what I've used for deer hunting - not for the ducks. If I read you
right there are some ponds/lakes available - somewhere in Hillsboro
(you mentioned taking the family along - everytime my wife sees a flock of
duck fly over she now gets all excited and wants to bring some "down" for
dinner..... She wanted a licence this fall - for both duck AND deer....
BUT...and partially my fault, we forgot that she needed to take the
"course" before she could get a licence - looks like she'll have to
    wait unitl next year..)

    dt,

Scout out Rt. 31 in the Mason, Greenville, Brookline, New Ipswich
area. There are tons of swamps, ponds, rivers etc. in there right
off the road. You may have to knock on a few doors to get permission
but it is worth it. Ask the local police, alot of times they will
be more then happy to point you in the right direction. Also ask
the local game warden, gun shops and local rod and gun clubs.

    Thanks.......

I'll have look around Mason and Greenville a little more this
weekend... Also looking for pheasant/s........ To date I've
looked in the wrong places... Seems I've seen one so far this
    season.......

One other.... For NH, I've heard sec "A" is the place to hunt this
year for deer, where sec "A" is the farthest/northernest place in the
    state.....
