502.2606 in maine with a bowSALEM::MACGREGORI'm the NRA/GONH/NAHCMon Oct 09 1989 09:106
    About two or three yars back a bowhunter in Maine got the state
    record with one shot from his bow. 606 lbs. This had made the paper.
    I don't know if I would have shot that with a bow unless I was right
    on top of it. Even 500 lbs. I think the guy was able to drive within
    50 yards of it though so it wasn't too bad of a drag.

502.3why don't i ever get a road kill?PNO::HORNMon Oct 09 1989 15:418
    re: .2

    must be nice to have a 50 yard drag!!! I shot a black bear this past
    weekend and i had a 7 hour hike out of a canyon (in arizona) -- that's
    7 hrs one way. but it was worth it. and i got a big bear with a
    real nice fur.

    .3 Congratulations! But aren't the long drags the most memorable?
    How big? Now if I can just get mine in N.H. this weekend...

502.5You're right!!!PNO::HORNMon Oct 09 1989 20:0024
    .4 You are 110% correct....the long drags, lots of planning, ie. the
    more that you put into it the more memorable and rewarding the hunt.
    I guess that's why I always go for the gusto. that's also why I have
    some record or near record trophies.

    "How big?" I shot a 250-275 pound female and for Arizona that's a good
    size. Especially with the dry spell that we have had the past year
    (alot of the bears are real lean). One shot, 200 yards, with a .308
    165 gr boat tail. Hit the right sholder, through the wind pipe and
    lungs and exited out the left rib cage. I shot this bear in a
    wilderness area. I've watched this bear for 2 years now and I
    finally decided that if I was going to get it I was really going
    to have to earn it. and I did. No trails, just a rocky creek bed
    to hike on (and slip on). Beautiful canyon too. I shot the bear at
    a little after 5pm sat evening while she was feeding on the prickle
    pear fruit. slept there that night and hiked out the next morning.
    By 11 am the temp was about 90 degrees (I got to my truck at 2:30pm).
    the hide and meat that I packed out was just fine. It was a great
    hunt.

    sorry about this straying off from the main topic.

    Congratulations on a fine trophy. I'm sure it was worth all the
    sweat and time that it took to take it back to the truck.

502.7Very RewardingSALEM::MACGREGORI'm the NRA/GONH/NAHCTue Oct 10 1989 08:544
    .4 I would be plenty proud of such a bear. Congratulations again
    on a job well done. But then one should not look at it as a job
    but a great pleasure and a rewarding experience.
