494.1 | Big Game Loads | PH4VAX::DISTRICT | District | Mon Oct 02 1989 22:47 | 7 |
| I guess it depends on what type of big game you will be hunting.I
know they make a #3 buck shot which could be used on deer and turkey.
If you have something bigger in mind you may what to go with a slug.
Remington makes both.
Happy Hunting,
Michael in Va.

| Federal makes # 2 buckshot loads for the 20 ga. - these are
3-inch loads, so don't try 'em in a 2 3/4" chamber.
And I believe buckshot is illegal for turkey in most places.
(Mass. and Vermont specify #2 birdshot as maximum, as I recall)

| I have a 20 guage with a full choke. Would it be possible to use this
gun for deer, and what type of ammunition could I use?

I used my Mossberg bolt action 20ga. for deer with improved Cylinder.
I had a Poly choke so the adjustment was easy.
Brenike(sp?) Magnums slugs worked the best.

| .3 I do not think it would be wise to shoot a slug out of a full
choke. I think a slug may ruin a full choke. I could be wrong.

re .5
This is a myth, it is perfectly fine to shoot a slug from a full choke.
I believed this until a gunsmith friend told me it was ok, I tried a
few slugs through my full choke and everthing was fine, it did not
change the patterning of the gun at all, nor the accuracy of the slugs.

| Winchester slugs are sized larger than other brands, to
accomodate 'looser' chokes. Remington and Federal are
purposely sized smaller to allow use in 'tighter' barrels
and chokes. This is why Winchester slugs generally yeild
slightly better accuracy in most guns. Avoid the Winchesters
and don't worry about other slugs hurting the barrel -
they're made to be safe.
Dana
PS there's a company making add-on sights for shotguns, cost
around $10-12 a set, for either ribbed or plain barrels.
They advertise in the gun rags. Just the ticket for better
shooting.

494.8 | Slugs are okay | WMOIS::S_NIEMI | I'm the NRA,ILA,CCRKBA | Wed Oct 04 1989 16:06 | 10 |
| I agree that the slugs are sized to fit through a full choke barrel
but all bets are off when you have a add on choke like the Polychoke.
The polychoke has an extra full setting and I have seen the choke blown
off the barrel when it was set like that.
I used to have a Kessler 12 guage bolt action shotgun with a full
choke barrel and I never had any trouble shooting slugs with that old
shotgun....

494.9 | choke info | BOSOX::RIZZO | | Wed Oct 04 1989 17:56 | 7 |
| Hi guys, I just discovered this note and its about time . This is
exactly what i have been looking for, a place to swap stories and
get info from other hunters.
I agree with brett, the slug will indeed ruin the choke as this
should be fired through a modified choke or ideally through an improved
cylinder

| If you are determined to shot Slugs from your Shotgun, I suggest
that you pick up 5 - different brands from different makers and
spend time at the range. All Slugs shot different in each Shotgun.
I'd hate to see a Deer get crippled due to someone not useing
the Slug that has the best accuracy from his/her Shogun.
Either Guns & Ammo or Shooting Times does an extensive report
on Slugs in the current issue. I'll look up the magazine and point
you to the right issue/month tomorrow.
