492.0. "NEW MASS. LAWS" by EXPRES::UFHEIL () Mon Oct 02 1989 16:38

         Mass. Fish and Game has finally got with the program. Some good news
    recently released. This year for the first time a rifled muzzleloader will
    be allowed during the primitive firearm season. Some additional good news
    is the opening of a fall turkey hunt in 1990. Does anybody know where
    good pheasant hunting is in Mass.? I know they stock but I'm not sure
    where.

    More info needed on the rifled muzzleloader for this season...
    Is this just in western mass or the whole state.....
    If this is true then i'll tell my wife that the season's not over
    yet, there's still 3 more days.....

    I would check the laws first ,but I believe it is the whole state. I
    think it is Dec. 18,19,20.

492.5In-line's now legal in MA38114::BINGWed Aug 17 1994 12:4511

    According to "The American Hunter", MA has now legalized the use
    of "In-Line" iginiton systems for black powder rifles. I don't
    know if it starts this year or 95'. If you have one of these types
    of BP rifles I suggest you call the F&G dept and see when you can
    start using it. The only drawback to this is that I have been told
    that it is possible to put a 12 gauge deer slug into these firearms
    and shoot it accurately. No doubt some knucklehead will try it, get
    caught and get them banned again.

    Yes, it would be possible to load a Remington .50cal sabot and shoot
    that out of a .50 rifle. but so what, are sabots illegal in Mass. Can
    you only shoot round ball?

    Here in Michigan, the muzzleloader is just that, a muzzle loader. slow
    to reload.  anything else goes.

    The only thing an inline gives you is faster lock time.

    What's the issue F&G has?

492.7I hope this is a little clearer38114::BINGThu Aug 18 1994 09:4613

    After re-reading my note and -1 I think maybe I didn't make myself
    clear. Some folks have in the past have put modern day, factory made
    12 gauge deer slugs (cartridge's) in the in-line ML's. (or so I'm told)
    The F&W folks thought this was cheating because you
    were not using powder and ball, therefore it was not "Primitive",
    so to prevent this they banned in-line ML's.
    As far as I know Sabots, buffalo bullets etc are legal in MA.
    This is a step forward for the MA F&W Dept. They also in the past
    couple years allowed the use of releases for bow hunting and rifled
    barrels for ML's.

492.8Sabots are useless here...27748::BUTCHNo Shortcut Too ShortThu Aug 18 1994 10:235
    	I don't think sabots make much difference in Mass anyways
    because without a rifled slug barrel, illegal in Mass, they lose
    their accuracy advantages.
