Is steel shot available/required for 16 gauge shotguns? I am thinking
of having the choke on mine opened up from full to somewhere around
IC/mod. The gunsmith I spoke with mentioned that he thought 16 gauge
was exempt from teh steel shot restrictions due to nobody making
the steel shot in 16 gauge.
If it is not exempt, where can I get some?
Is it exempt in MA?

| If this is true I would be interested/surprized.
I would consider useing a 16 ga with lead over any 12 ga steel.
Even if I let my conscience win and stay with the steel how many
other people who found out would buy a 16 just for ducks?
If I were the goverment I would not allow this exclusion but if I
were the goverment I might no have steel at all.
I am not convinced at its good.
I think we gave in too easily.

| So? Since steel has a lower specific gravity than lead you get
*more* of the same size pellets per ounce. Or just bump up one
shot size. If you used # 6 lead shot, go to #5 steel. It may
cost you 5 yards of effective range but you'll survive. (Most
shooters probably shouldn't be shooting at the outer limits
of their guns' 'effective range' anyway.)

As you guys said, the DOW verified that there is no exception to the
steel shot rules. Oh well, it was worth a shot, now I just have to find
a store that carries it. Any suggestions?

| You might try Pete's in Hudson. I was there last week and *think*
I saw 16 gauge steel shot. I wasn't really looking for it, so I could
be mistaken.

| Evidently Federal makes steel shot in 16 guage. Maybe KMart will have it;
they usually carry alot of Federal stuff.
