433.0. "Arizona fall hunt permits" by PNO::HORN () Sat Aug 05 1989 20:28

    In the great state of Arizona, the Game and Fish Department has
    mailed out the tags that were drawn for the fall big game hunts.
    This note is for people to tell us what tags they had the good
    fortune to get drawn for and then later this fall for those people
    to report back their success and good times.

    As an fyi, in Arizona we have to draw for Buffalo, Desert and Rocky
    Mountain Big Horn Sheep, Antelope, Mule and White-tail Deer and
    Elk -- which are all fall hunts. Bear, Mountain Lion and Turkey
    permits are sold over the counter (no drawings). The odds for a
    successful draw are approx. as follows (depending on the choice
    of unit): Buffalo -- just plain tough (your only allowed to shoot
    one a life time, a total of 85 permits this year), Big Horn Sheep
    -- harder yet (Again, you can shoot one, each type, a life time,
    a total of 80 permits this year), Antelope 1% to 7% rifle, 5% to 20%
    with black powder and 2% to 100% with bow, Elk 2% to 32% rifle,
    6% to 22% black powder and 14% to 76% archery, and Deer 4% to 100%
    rifle, 8% to 41% muzzleloader and archery tags are sold over the
    counter, so 100%. The above odds are higher for out of staters
    on some game (number of out of staters is limited for some game).

    So, if anyone gets any tags and/or gets any tags filled -- tells
    us about it.

433.1ELK and DEER YES, ANTELOPE NO,SHEEP???PNO::HORNSat Aug 05 1989 20:4618
    Not to brag, but...... So far I have received my first choice for
    Elk and first choice for Deer (both are rifle tags in unit 27 which
    has the following boundries: North the town of Alpine, East the
    New Mexico State line, West the Apache and San Carlos Indian
    Reservations and South the town of Morenci). 27 is a great unit,
    has it all, but it is TOUGH hunting. UP and DOWN, canyons, etc.
    and your walking on rocks every inch of the area (in other words
    none of you should ever get the idea to put in for a permit in my
    area -- ha ha).

    On the down side I did receive a pink slip (a rejection) for my
    muzzleloader Antelope tag. And still no word on my Sheep tag.

    Last year I got 5 pink slips! So, I went to Wyoming and got 2
    Antelope. So, this is going to be a great fall for me.

    Good luck! to the others,
    Scott
433.2Sheep is a no goPNO::HORNMon Aug 07 1989 16:484
    sheep is a no go. So, it's deer and elk this year and i'm real
    happy!

    what about the other AZ digits ???
433.3Are we talking Coues deer?MAIL::HENSONMon Aug 07 1989 17:4411

    	Just curious, but are talking regular whitetail or the
    	Coues subspecies? I've read a lot about this one and
    	am interested. I currently live in Kansas (the land
    	of gentle breezes) and don't have any plans to hunt
    	in Arizona. However, you never know.

    	Thanks,

    	Jerry

    you are correct, we have the Coues subspecies in Arizona.
    if you ever hunt them, your best bet would be to hunt a unit
    near the Mexico boarder. by the way, if you ever need any info
    or plan to come out this way, look me up or give me a call.
    Arizona has some great hunting.

     Speaking of Coues, that is what I was drawn for here in Arizona. I
    will (as Scott mentioned) be hunting in the south/east corner of the
    state. As for the other species that I put in for, shall I say I'm
    seeing PINK... 8^(

     If anyone is interested there are still ~6,900 deer tags still left
    after the first draw. I am pretty sure these are all Whitetail hunts.
