An interesting "Field Notes" item from the July AMERICAN HUNTER
magazine for those of you who may not have seen it:
Maine reports that the state's alltime record for trophy-age white-
tail bucks was broken during the 1988 hunting season. Figures
compiled by the Wildlife Division indicate that 4,600 of the 17,139
bucks recorded had reached the age of 4 1/2 years, and a record 967 of
those qualified for the Maine Sportsman's "Biggest Bucks in Maine
Club" with a dressed weight of 200 pounds or more.
Six years since Maine adopted a general bucks-only season, the
buck harvest has increased to 40% higher than the last 5 years of
either sex hunting. But, the percentage of trophy bucks in the overall
population and the age breakdown of harvested bucks remains stable.
They credit the surge in big bucks to an increase in the general
whitetail population.

This is my first day back from hunting Alagash last week. We
arrived on October 29th. The season opened the day before for natives
only. One of these (natives) showed a beautiful 8 pointer with
heavy rack he'd gotten that day. Said the native:
"Hot damn, I thought I had a chance at the pool when that buck
weighed in at 233 dressed. Then I found out some guy had already
checked one in at 276 !"

I saw a 247 pounder with a 24 inch spread rack taken from maine
a couple of days ago.
Best deer I have ever seen.....................

My brother-inlaw took a nine pointer 248 lbs 21 inch spread last tuesday
it was the only deer they saw in a week.
