390.0. "Wing Shooting School on MAY 21" by LESCOM::JUCH () Mon May 01 1989 19:36

On 21 May 1989 the Hidden Meadow Club in Temple, NH is sponsoring
a Griffin and Howe Shooting School. Unlike other schools, there
will be individual instruction. You may reserve up to 2 hours with
the instructor, but no less than 1/2 hour.

The lead instructor is Rex Gage, who was associated with Holland
and Holland of London, the gunmakers, for 33 years. He teaches
the instinctive or Churchill method of wing shooting. Technique
is improved and faults corrected while correct form is reinforced
through repetitious firing at clay targets.

The fee is $225 per hour or $125 per 1/2 hour plus shells and targets.
(of course, you can bring oyur own shells and gun.) Included
in the price, in addition to the instruction, is refreshments and
a cookout. Please bring your flyrod to try your luck at Hidden
Meadows' trout ponds (catch and release only.) A representative
from Hunter's in New Boston will be available for informal fly casting
    instruction (no charge.)

What is most important, I feel, is that included in the price of
the lesson is a proper gun fitting. Many of you have read my earlier
note about gun fit (#138?) know how important proper fit is for
wing shooting or sporting clays. Dave Cosby from Griffin and Howe
will have a try-gun, which is a shotgun that can be adjusted in
several dimensions (length of pull, cast, etc.) that you will use
to shoot at targets during the lesson. When it is felt you have
the right dimensions, the try-gun will be measured and you'll receive
a copy of the dimensions so you can bring your favorite(s) to your
    gunsmith for adjustment.  Orvis currently charges $50 for a fitting;
I've seen other firms charge up to $100: so figure that cost into
the price of the lesson and it's downright economical.

There are other clubs that have British instruction and I've taken
lessons from them at similar prices. However, Rex is regarded as
one of the two or 3 best in the world. I might add that our club
is doing this on a cost plus basis; we're not making any money on
it. (You'll make out your checks to Griffin and Howe.)
There are so many things a good instructor can do for you that
it surprises me that more people don't take lessons. You take
instruction for music, golf, and tennis; why not shoooting?

Please send me mail at lescom::juch or dtn 223-4668 if you have
any other questions or want to attend. There are only about 6 slots
open, so please get in touch before Friday. If you'd
rather call me at home, my number is 603 424 2422.

Did you catch the article on Rex Gage in the Union Leader this past
Sunday? It was a UPI story so it may have printed elsewhere.
