373.0. "Dream hunts" by DECWET::HELSEL (A thousand points of lightwt threads) Fri Mar 10 1989 12:42

Okay, hunting season just ended and we are all anxiously
awaiting summer, right? But what about next year?

If you want to hunt someplace like Montana or Wyoming
or Idaho, you probably have to apply for a lottery
drawing about now....or last month sometime. I'm wondering
who is applying for what in terms of their dream hunts.

For instance, Jeff Amberson said last year he wanted to go Elk
hunting. I wonder if he has made any plans.

The Whitetail lottery in Montana is accepting applications
until March 15th (postmark). I am thinking about a Whitetail
trip to Montana. They say that most of the B&C racks on
the hoof today are in NW Montana. I'll admit that I saw
3 *nice* racks last year while I was Antelope hunting. These
were racks like I never saw on the hoof in my life, but not
    B&C racks.

Anyway, if you're going someplace interesting (or want to), let's
    hear about it.

My manager and i are going to Idaho in late september for a
8 day hunt for elk, deer, and bear. We booked with an outfitter
in January of 1988. Even at this early date it was the outfitters
last opening for this fall. Booking with an outfitter we didn't
have to go through a lottery for our licences because each outfitter
in Idaho is allotted a number of licences for his clients. At the
beginning of the year we mailed the licence fees and aplications
to the outfitter and he purchased them for us. This his a pack in
trip into the Bitterroot-selway wilderness area. Our main objective
is elk but we purchased the extra licence just in case we get an
elk then we will still be able to hunt. We will be going during
the rut for elk so we hope to hear the elk bugling. It will be an
exciting trip even if we don't get anything.

March 15th was the day for license drawings in Montana. Historically
the big game license has sold out in about three days. There are
17000 big game licenses awarded, with 5600 allocated ( up front)
to licensed outfitters. These go for $450.00 each.
This year, for $200.00 you could opt for a deer license. This also
includes a small game license, fishing license, and conservation
stamp. They also go on sale starting March 15th. There are ( methinks)
6000 of these for sale. Drawings for these are done on a three tiered
basis with hunters using a licensed outfitter getting priority,
followed then by hunters escorted by residents, then just plain
    non-residents.
Montana is hunting MECCA! I hunted the Bob Marshall two years
ago for elk and deer. I'm going back this September again with
the same outfitter. I booked the hunt last month. The outfitter
is giving my party a discount because we're re-booking with him.
      Only 190 days to go...

Well, this file is close to dead again. Dontcha just hate spring and
summer :-) Unless of course you have a turkey season I guess.

Has anybody planned any dream hunts for next year?

I've sent my money off to Montana for a big game combination tag. This
will get you elk, deer, upland and fish, but no antelope or bear. The
cost of this ticket is $450 for out of staters. There are 11,000 of
these and the drawing in April 15 or thereabouts. The deadline was
    March 15.

We plan to hunt the NW area of MT near the Idaho border. This is the
Flathead Lake region. Hopefully I 'll have a chance to go back there
this summer and check out the area.

I'm also curious how .1 and .2 made out last year.

     Brett,
WE had a wonderful hunt in the Bob Marshall. Lots of fresh air,
beautiful views, good food,.... No ELK though!
I passed on several smaller Mulie bucks, we were so far back in
it seemed improper to shoot a small one, I held out for a monster
    and he never materialized.
We did see a few elk hewever, and heard a few bugles, but the weather
was very warm again and they just weren't talking much.
The last day we rode out in a blinding snowstorm, and for those
who have never ridden a horse down over the continental divide in
a blizzard, it's quite an experience! I'd do it again in a minute!!!

There were LOTS of goats around our area, so if anybody ever gets
picked for a mountain goat permit, yhis is where you should really
consider. The first day my partner and I stalked within 35 yards
of a VERY RESPECTABLE billy, shot some pictures and had a great
laugh. If only we had a permit!

The flathead lake area is beautiful country, we were just south
of that part of Montana, and physically located between Holland
Peak and the Divide itself at the headwaters of the Big Salmon River.

This is some of the ruggedest country on the planet, and one should
be in great physical shape to even think of hunting it. I trained
for a year as did my hunting partner, and we had all we could do
to hang on at times. The area to the north, nearer flathead, might
ba a bit flatter and more huntable, but it's all spectacular to
    view.

We are thinking of a possible moose hunt this fall, although I'de
like to make another trip to Ungava Bay for caribou. Now that's
one FUNKY part of the world! If you like the wide open spaces, that
    place is a must!

best of luck, it's almost Vt. turkey time....

Well, my 1990 dream hunt had to be canceled :-( *&^$^$#%&*^&*%^&$#@!!

My brother is getting married right in the middle of the scheduled
time I had. You think he would know better ! Was really looking
forward to another Canadian bear hunt/fishing trip too.

But I got my trophy for the year, landed a 7~ pound 23 inch Rainbow
last weekend. What a fight ! I have it at the taxidermist now.
I'll see it in 9-12 weeks. (another wait period)

With the luck I had last year calling in those bulls, I'm content
to wait for archery season. (a longer wait here).
