368.0. "Who is the M.D.C." by MPGS::LEGARE () Thu Mar 02 1989 13:05

Just who is the Metropolitan District Commission (M.D.C.) and what powers
do they have ?

I live in an area of Massachusetts that encompasses quite a bit of
watershed property owned by the MDC. The property boundaries are not
identified well, and truly not posted well . However the areas are
patrolled by Metropolitan Police in cruisers. During the bow season I
saw one cruiser parked waiting for the hunter to return to his truck
(this particular area was not posted at all). I don't know the outcome
but would like to find out. I also have heard only other unsubstantiated
stories.

As an outdoorsman I wish to utilize the property in a non destructive
manner. Specifically hiking, fishing and hunting. What I don't want is a
hassle, fine or possible arrest.

I plan on contacting the M.D.C. but would like to poll you people first.
I am specifically referring to the Rutland and Holden area but would, like any
info regarding the M.D.C. at all.

The last that I heard, the M.D.C/M.W.R.A. is instituting a new
land use policy for "it's" watershed areas. These rules seem
like zoning-type regulations-i.e. rules on building and developing
the land. It could extend to things like swimming pools and
    	lawn chemical use.

As far as the M.D.C., they are now a police force.
They also run pools, skating rinks, and parks. They do have
the authority to make arrests for game law violations(but I
doubt if they know 10% of the laws.)

Call your Rep. to find out about the new land regulations,
and don't argue with an M.D.C. trooper if confronted. You'll
    	lose.
