| I have been writing back and forth to Filippo since last March
and this past friday I got to meet him. He was on his way to Maine
to hunt with Bruce and we spent a couple hours together.
He is defintly a Sporstman. He enjoys the outdoors as much as we
do, and runs into the same problems with the antis as we do. He
said that in Italy it is much worse than here in the USA. For the
area that he hunts, there may be as many as 300 hunters and they
are allowed only 15-20 Chamois. Hesaid the season is closed wheh
that number is reached. usually one day.
He and his wife were able to travel across the US and see many places.
He enjoyed his stay and hopefully will come back some day.
Unfortunatley the time went by all to fast and he had to be on his
way. I hope he was able to collect the big buck that he wanted.

| Jeff, he is hunting with Bruce Moultroup. He went up last saturday.
I hope he is lucky enough to get one. I've sent him info. on hunting
Whitetail deer and Maine. Hopefully that helped him. I sent him
a book published by Outdoor Life called "Tracking Wildgame(?)".
I showed him what animals he would be most likely to see and stressed
NOt to shoot a mooose. Since I had never met him and did not know
what type of hunter he was I thought I should explain what the
diiference between a moose and a deer was. But he already knew.
I guess he hunts mostly Chamois, Wapiti (elk), Danubian Deer(Yukoslavia?),
and small game.
Walt
p.s. Bruce if you read this how about an update on Filippos hunt.

364.5 | GREAT TIME | BTOVT::MOULTROUP | | Wed Feb 07 1990 10:33 | 33 |
| Sorry Walt it took me so long to reply on Filippo's hunt but this is
the first time i have looked back at this note since hunting season.
The first day hunting we had about 3" of snow on the ground. We
seperated at the car and hunted on our own. I picked up a track and
shot my deer by 8:00, 6 point 144 pounds. I signaled Filippo with a
couple of shots and he found me after i was about 2/3rds of the way
back to the car. He helped me drag the rest of the way and decided
not to hunt anymore that day because it had started to pour and we were
soaked. I had had him buy a compass and had given him some matches
before we went hunting so he would have this equipment incase he got
lost. Be fore the hunt he didn't thing he would need them but after the
hunt he said it would be posible for him to get lost.(Quote: the trees
are so close together) He is used to hunting above timberline in the
alps. So he asked me if he could hunt with me the following day. The
snow was gone by tuesday but the leaves were wet and it was a good day
to hunt. We hunted the same mountain as the day before. We stillhunted
up though the hardwoods until we hit thicker softwoods, then we turned
and followed along in the edge of the softwoods for about half an hour.
Then i spotted a deer ahead of us. I told Filippo and he stepped up
beside me and i told him to look at it though his scope to see if it
had horns. He looked for about two seconds then shot, the brush was
thick so i didn't see the horns until the deer fell then they showed
up real well. It weighed in at 201 and had 8 points. He shot it at 8:20
A.M. and it took us until 2:00 P.M. to get it loaded into his cousins
brand new car that he had loaned to Filippo to drive to Maine. If you
wanted to see someone excited and happy it was Filippo. He is a very
good person and hunter and i would love to have him hunt with me again
sometime.
Bruce
p.s. I send in a picture of Filippo and me with our deer to Fra for the
photo album.

Bruce, thanks for the update on the hunt. I've already talked with
Filippo and I was as excited as he was. Like I told him, I've never
seen one that big and he was lucky to get it. He is now planning
a hunt in Yugoslavia(?) for roe deer and mouflon, whatever that
is.

| Walt Filippo is planning his trip for Hungary and Mouflon are a type of
wild sheep. When we were in Maine we spend more time dragging than we
did hunting and i also told him that normally it just isn't this easy.
