350.1 | Good Question..... ? | ATEAM::AYOTTE | | Wed Feb 01 1989 13:10 | 4 |
| Good question. Perhaps they are afraid of the increased range of
the rifle and perceive this as being more dangerous than lesser
accuracy.

| re .1 The range is not increased by rifling, rather the *effective*
range is. Since a less accurate gun is more likely to miss the
target, and send it's bullet to points unknown, smoothbores are
*more* dangerous. But try telling the Mass. F&G that.

| You should tell the fish and game that. There is an open meeting
on this subject before the F&G board this spring. I'll post it here
when I find out the date, place and time.

The Primitive Firearms Season::
Primitive seems to be the KEY word here.
The State of Mass as far as I can figure out and this is my opinion,
Defines a Primitive Gun of one that is difficult or having a greater
chance of not going off or not as accurate. The reason I belive
this is the following.
FLINT-LOCK RIFLED BORE IS LEGAL IN MASS.
CAP-LOCK RIFLED BORE IS ILLEGAL IN MASS.
CAP-LOCK SMOOTH-BORE IS LEGAL IN MASS.
So as I see it the Flint has a greater chance of not going off and
the Cap has a greater chance of not hitting its mark.
Thou not by much but never the less this is the reason Mass came
up with for there PRIMITIVE Season. After all isn't it suppose to
be the challenge of hunting deer with a weapon that you must use
more of your skills with.
Now theres talk of Mass considering making the Cap-Lock Rifled-Bore
legal, And to think I just purchased a S.B. Barrel for my renegade.
See Ya,
Rick

350.5 | Range | ATEAM::AYOTTE | | Thu Feb 02 1989 10:36 | 9 |
| I'd like to know how a 265gr round ball traveling 1100+/- fps at the
muzzle is going to have the same range (effective or ineffective)
as a 175gr round ball traveling 2000+/- fps at the muzzle. Now
I don't know the bullet coefficients for these bullets but they
are probably similar due to the shape being the same. I will agree
that the range of the weapon is probably not a concern because they
do allow flint rifles as stated in another reply.

I went to the fishinf expo this past sunday and asked the officer
from the Masss. div. of Wildlife why the law read smooth bore only,
he said that there was no reason other than the fact that the two
bigshots who were in charge were totally against it. He went on
to say that it was up to us to keep bugging them to change the law.
also the two people who were in charge no longer are.

350.7 | Keep Your Eyes Open | KRAPPA::KEYWORTH | John X2784 WFO/C5 | Tue Feb 07 1989 08:54 | 11 |
| I called the Fisheries and Wildlife Board this morning. They still
don't have a date for the open meeting but said it will be widely
published within the next month.
Also, they said that this meeting was for 6 or 7 issues on Whitetail
deer hunting, not just for rifled caplocks.
So everyone keep your eyes open for the published date, time,
place, and agenda.

I heard that Mass. was going to allow the use of rifled primitive
arms starting this deer season. Has anyone else heard this? I read
this in the Herald awhile back.
