342.0. "Knight MK-85" by SALEM::MACGREGOR (I'm the NRA) Tue Jan 24 1989 12:52
In a recent North American Hunter magazine I saw an ad for a different
type muzzleloader than I was use to seeing. It looked like a modern
firearm, which it actually is, a modern muzzleloader from,
cioncidently, Modern Muzzle Loading, Inc. The model is the Knight
MK-85. it has many different stocks to choose from, composite to
laminated wood to walnut. It also had many other features, adjustable
trigger, double safety with in-line ignition, and only 7 lbs.
It is drilled and tapped for a scope and uses Lothar/Walther barrells.
It has a faster rate of twist. One hunter is using a 180 grn. .44
mag bullett with plastic sabots fired out of a .50 caliber. It comes
in .45, .50 and .54 calibers. Prices are a little high. $480 for
walnut stocks, $520 for laminated stocks, and $560 for a stainless
steel rifle. 1 in 24 inch twist for .45 and 1 in 32 inch twist for
.50 and .54 caliber.

| I've seen them also! They don't really appeal to me personally.
Part of the fun of hunting with one is knowing the gun hasn't changed
much in 100+ years! Seems like way too much money to spend on a
low performance, no-esthetic value gun.
But in the same breath, I hunt with a compound bow also! So to each
his own, I guess.

342.2 | don't stand in the way of progress? | SALEM::MACGREGOR | I'm the NRA | Sat Jan 28 1989 08:15 | 9 |
| yeah I know what you mean-.1. I also hunt with a compound but I
am looking at getting a new one this year. I am looking at getting
a Martin Cougar Magnum. What do you think of this bow? What do you
hunt with? The season has only been over for a month but I can't
wait to get out there again. The price of the MK-85 is very, very
expensive and I think if I do get a blackpowder rifle this year
I will end up getting a Thompson Center Hunter. Have you any good
or bad points about his rifle?

342.3 | DOES IT COME WITH A 3-9X SCOPE? | ATEAM::AYOTTE | | Mon Jan 30 1989 08:51 | 20 |
| Better check the laws in your area/state before purchasing any
of these "modern" muzzleloaders. Although most states specify the
type of ignition some states require that the ignition system be
exposed to the elements. I believe that the MK-85 uses a percussion
cap that is protected by a bolt "action" which would make it an
illegal hunting weapon in some places.
As far as getting a Renegade Hunter goes... you've made a good
choice. The only recommendation I have is to trash the sights and
put on the Hawken setup. You might consider a Lyman peep or you
could do like a friend of mine did and have Remington sights installed.
With any of the Renegade series of guns the weakest link in the
accuracy equation (assuming consistant loading, i.e. 80gr) is the
sight system. Others will argue that the guns shoot fine just the
way they are and you could make the gun perform well on paper under
range conditions (plenty of time to study the sight picture and
make adjustments). I'll never understand why they put 50 yard sights
on a 100 yard gun.
