331.0. "Worst moments afield for 1988" by CLUSTA::STORM () Thu Jan 05 1989 13:42

OK, I think it's only fair that I also start a "worst" moment afield
for 1988. I realize that the worst day hunting beats the best day
working, but this note should give us a chance to laugh at ourselves!

My worst adventure has to be the last day of the coastal duck season.
We had planned to hunt a half day and try a new area. We launched
at high tide. When we decided to head back at 10:30, we saw the
river we had come down was already dry. We had to wait until 3:00
before the tide came back enough to head out. I expected the section
of the river to dry up, but not nearly that much sooner than low
    tide.

We weren't seeing many ducks. To make matters worse, 3 clamers
came in moments after we realized we were stuck. They dug clams
next to our decoys for the 4+ hrs we waited to get out. Argh.

Being stuck in the marsh wasn't so terrible. It became terrible
when we got home 5 hours later that expected! :-((((

my worst moment this season had to be while hunting grouse. I went
to my favorite bird hunting spot on a beautiful Sat. am, I parked
the truck at the end of a fresh logging road and my faithfull dog
Spike and I started walking, we walked and walked and walked for
about three hours without seeing/hearing a single bird, we
returned to the truck tired and discouraged, I put the dog and
my gun in the truck and started to relieve myself on a tree beside
the truck, for some reason I looked up into the tree and saw the
biggest grouse I'd seen all year, as soon as I moved he was gone.
That dam bird sat there while I had put the dog and gun in the truck,
and watched me take a piss on his tree. It's not all that bad to
go home empty handed, but to miss an opportunity like that really
    gets on my nerves.

The most sickening sight I've ever witnessed in my fifteen years of
deer hunting in Ma. occured this past shotgun season. I returned to
a wooded area near my folks house that I used to hunt when I was a
boy. My primary aim was to find a spot that was somewhat void of the
typical hunting pressure that is synonymous with the pumpkin season.
I emerged from the woods at about noontime and found a mutilated
mature doe that some son of a b*t*h stuffed into several trash bags.
Upon further investigation, I noticed that the prime cuts were
literally hacked off, with the exception of the rear quarters.

To make matters worse, the carcus was no more than ten feet off the
paved road. "What a beautiful Sight" I didn't know whether to curse
    or cry.
At any rate I took the remainder of the deer and placed it in the
back of my pickup; and God help the warden who would've tried to
intervene or anyone for that matter. To see this sort of
senseless waste is truly unforgiveable. Sometimes it's a wonder
we're still allowed to hunt at all.
I only wish I was there to witness this hero's action. I would've
carved him/her up in the same fashion and shoved 'em down the
    nearest well.

331.4YOUR WORST DAY HUNTING IS STILL BETTER THAN....ATEAM::AYOTTESun Jan 08 1989 18:398
Dropped my bow 22 feet from a tree stand in VT (this happened after
climbing down/up to retrieve a glove that I dropped first). Missed
a "wall-hanger" with the muzzleloader in NH. Caught a bunch of
"thieves" putting on a drive on one of our VT leases. Found a
dead/rotted doe hanging in a tree while muzzleloading in MA.

But you know how it is......BEATS A GREAT DAY AT WORK!!
331.5Better late than neverDNEAST::STEVENS_JIMThu Sep 07 1989 12:3017
Opening day having 5 deer run from left to right in a gully where all
I could see were their backs as they bounded...Didn't see another deer
    until the last day..

Last day, standing against a tree for 2 hours. Finally moving across
the field. Two minutes later 3 shots from behind me..Followed the
deers tracks...It stepped on my boot marks. If I'd stayed the damn
    thing would have tackled me.

Last day, 2:45..Going through a swamp on my way back to camp having
said "Well a nice season, but do deer"...Shot a plump doe...The best
part is using a doe permit the last day...

    Can't wait for October 28...
