The so called DUKE knows he would even have a hard time winning
any election after this last race. But don't go off kissing the
ground yet. Joe Kennedy is rumored to run in his place. Can't get
    much worse..........

Read something into what he said. He said that he would probably not
run for govenor again, no matter what his future plans are. He then
said something to the effect of its real hard to campaign for the
presidency while you are govenor. He probably is doing this to make
more time and spice up his image for 92.

| | Unfortunately, the Duke is now free to solve is 1/2 billion
dollar deficit with means that would certainly kill his
re-election prospects--higher fees and higher taxes.

of hunting and fishing licenses, etc in the appropriate areas...
Perhaps the Duke will fall by the wayside la Walter Mondale.

| | He's up to something since he is a politican and don't forget that
we own him until 1990 and anything can happen! As for Joe Kennedy, if
this happens its out of the pot and right into the fire!! Also
I have heard that the globe had a writeup about a possible
attitude problem with Mr. Joe Kennedy???? Has anyone or does anyone
know if such a writeup that was in the globe recently???? I have not
read this myself but I have heard it was in the globe.

| | Yaahoo! No More Duke. But who will be next ? The lady form the wax
museum Ms. Murphey ? Ray Flyn ? Does he believe in hunting ?
So far no one on the Dem's side does us sportsmen any good.
Ed King was a sportsmen and we had great stocking when he was in.
Will the Republican's go with him ? I never heard of the other's
    they're talking about.

| | No matter who's taking over for the Duke, now is the time to start your Duke
scrapbook. He'll be back in '92! And we'll be waiting for him with lots
of news articles on how he handles himself in the next couple of years. So
if you see a news story on the Duke that's revealing, save it. As sure as
the sun will rise tomorrow, you'll be glad you did sometime in the future
when he runs for office again.

| | From what I saw on PBS TV the last three nights you SPORTSMEN have
no one to blame but your selves. The governor and the legislators
usually vote by the influence they receive from special interest
groups (lobbys). If you want to protect your interests join the
special interest groups that favor SPORTSMEN. Look what they did
for the prevailing wage law and the farm animal issues in the last
    election.

Would you care to enlighten us with what you watched on PBS?
And what are these special interest groups that can force the
governor to OBEY THE LAW and stop robbing dedicated funds?
And didn't those silly animal-welfare advocates pushing the
farm bill suffer a big defeat?

| | Thats my point the animal welfare bill was defeated because the
farmers were able to educate more people to their point of view:
"the state has no business regulating chickens."
THE PBS TV showing was a 3 hour documentry on how POWER is divided
in the government. It was an eye opener.

| | No. The NRA is a wonderful organization for protecting
gun owners rights. While I believe that all gun owners should
join and voice their opinions in the NRA and through the NRA,
this will not guarantee fair hunting laws for the sportsperson.

When i lived in MA, I represented my sportsmen's (person implied)
club in a group called the Middlesex County League. The Middlesex
County League, along with other similar organizations, are the folks
that stand up for your hunting rights!

If you look back in this file, the archery file, the fishing file
and the firearms file, you'll see notes where I entered references
to specific (anti)hunting bills and the number/name of the person
to call to help influence his/her vote. I agree with Mr. Thackaberry
that you have to get out and do something and not just complain.

In a presidential election, you have your vote. In these state
house bills, you gotta get to your representative and beat on his/her
ear until s/he fears not being re-elected. They have their ideas,
but they will change their vote in order to maintain their seats
    for whatever reason. Believe it.

Warning, if you get involved in something like the Middlesex County
League, then you better be prepared to work. It is not an easy
task. I thought that I was able to help by trying to alert many
of you to call your representatives on crucial issues. Many of
you did this and we were able to defeat all the bills that you
voiced your opinions on. IT WORKS!

Maybe some of you might want to start your own organization or join
an organization similar to the one I mentioned. Obviously if you
live in NH or CO or Alaska, you would want to participate in a local
organization. But I encourage this. If you are interested in the
MCL, Maybe IAMOK::Bartolomeo and he can put you in touch with Mr.
    Hayes.

Okay, okay, I'm off my soapbox.

| 327.14 | Bill Weld is on our side | MPGS::GIFFORD | When nature calls you have to answer | Mon Oct 15 1990 10:09 | 49 |
| | This note has been very quite for a long time so I thought I'd wake it
    up again.

Yesterday (10-14-90) on Ch.5 (Boston) there was a show called Boston
Common or On the Common (I think). On this show they discuss current State
issues. Well, yesterday they interviewed William Weld, R. candidate for gov.
and one of the issues that came up was gun control.

The reason this came up was, last week some time Bill Weld was in
Springfield Ma. getting indorsed by some groups, I'm not sure who, but the
subject of guns came up and he started that he was a "lifetime sportsman,
lifetime hunter and a lifetime gunowner". He supports LESS RESTRICTIONS ON
ACCESS TO FIREARMS. (thats me shouting for joy). Any way during the
interview yesterday the "reporter or host" what ever you want to call it
asked Mr. Weld about his stand on "assault weapons" and how he differs from
    John Silber, D. candidate.

Bill said that the problem is not with the weapons but with the people
that misuse them. He repeated this atleast 4 times to the turkey and
the guy kept trying to corner him. One of the questions he asked was,
"What does anyone need with an uzi or one of those automatics". Bill
Weld turned to him and said "That is not the question the question is
what are we doing with the people that misuse them. We need a mandatory
10 year sentence for anyone misusing a firearm, any firearm, during a
crime." I really liked this statement and he kept repeating this over
and over. He said that Silber is of the Dukakas mind set of Ban the
firearms. He said there are already thousands of illegal guns on the
street and more coming in from out of state and that banning them here
would do no good at all. He said what we need to do is get the people
misusing the firearms off of the streets. He has also been quoted as
saying he is all for every citizen having freer access to firearms.

I had put in an earlier note (I think) about how Bill Weld was
wishy-washy on the gun issue. I now humbly take back that statement
with egg on my face. I was pretty much convinced on voting for Weld
before but after seeing this interview yesterday, I will also encourage
anyone else I can to vote for him. He is definately on our side.(At
    least untill he's elected)

One other thing, when the turkey host first brought up the subject of
guns, he said to Bill. "You have stated that you own 4 shotguns for
hunting and skeet, What do you use them for?" (duhhh)<-authors comment.
Bill responded, with a smirk on his face. "For hunting and skeet" (real
    smart huh?)

So all you Mass gun owners get out and get behind Bill Weld, I'd like
to see him blow Silber away in Nov.

| | re. last

<He said that Silber is of the Dukakis mind set.........>

If he (Weld) did say that, he may have been jumping the gun.
Silber has said he owns a couple of firearms himself and didn't feel
new gun laws where necessary. He did say that he favored regulation
of assualt rifles. When asked what was an assualt rifle, Silber
said, "One that fires repeatedly with a single trigger pull." (That's
not a quote.) Now that *certainly* is not of the Dukakis mind-set.
The Duke will never stop till all privite citizens are gunless.

If you can believe these 2 guys (Weld & Silber) maybe we in
Massachusetts are in a *win/win* situation. Wouldn't that be nice.
We could select a candidate on the basis of other stands/issues.

But I agree, it's refreshing to hear Weld's position on responsible gun
    ownership.

I think that's how Weld got the nomination in the first place. If it
hadn't been his stand abortion, we would be looking at a Pierce vs.
Silber race in Nov. But that's another story in another conference.
