289.0. "Did Danl' Boone go through all this??" by GLDOA::MORRISON (Dave) Mon Nov 28 1988 13:41
I have learned upon calling the folks listed in 92.4 that the way to
finish the alum/salt process is by rinsing with a small amout of
water and using Boraxo or some Sodium Carbonate product to neutralize
the alum. Too much H2O destroys the effect of the alum. In order
to get the hide to be soft it needs to be streached and worked over
a board or rope, something to break down the fiber while adding
the neetsfoot oil. Finally, I found the answer to my former question
of how much solution per hide; about 10 gals. The M&M Fur folks
in 92.4 will also send a catalog on their products which include
books on tanning, etc. I can hardly wait to get going on this project,
hope my wife will be enthusiastic about deer hides over the back
of the couch!!!
