276.4At least I got my shot at oneNETWRK::GSMITHI need two of everythingFri Nov 18 1988 14:2123

Well, I just returned from my annual trip to Maine. Same results
    - i didn't get one! But this year I have SHOULD HAVE! I got a shot
at a 8+ pointer, nice, nice rack. I was standing on a blown down
tree overlooking a swamp. Had a nice shot at anything that went
through the swamp, but NO... I saw this buck to my right, about
70-90 yards into the thick woods/cover.

It didn't see me about 10 feet up. I let it walk between two trees
and fired. I thought the beed was right on it! Damn... missed and
it bounded off. Next year I am going to practice, practice, practice.
You simply don't see that many... the ones you see you had better
    HIT!

The trip was successful, per usual, however. We took 3 buck. 183
    pound 11 pointer, 155 pound 8 pointer, and a 178 pound 4(four) pointer.
The 4 pointer should have had a bigger rack in comparison to it's
    body size.

I use a 35 Marlin. Any comments about putting a sight on it, or
is practice the way to go?

Smitty (who took a lot of sh** for missing that deer)

Don't feel so all alone, Smitty......I've got enough egg on my face
after this Saturday to make a McMuffin. I was hunting in Southern
NH with a friend that lives local. We tried out the area across
the street from his house for the first time. Spent the day, lots
of good buck sign around. As I worked the dense brush, I was glad
I had left the scoped bolt-action at home and taken a lever 44 mag.

Saw lots of sign, but no deer. As I was walking the cartroad out,
I could see my car (and hunting partner) about 100 or so yards ahead.
I stopped to take a pull off the canteen and unload the rifle, after
all I was done hunting for the day. As I turned my head right to
undo the canteen, I heard a sound in the brush off to my left....you
guessed it! Big flag goes up and headed right for my car. By the
time I had a decent shot (with looking for antlers and trying not
to hit my car/hunting partner)....I missed. Three times. Big buck.
    AARGH!!

I would -love- to do that all over again with a scoped bolt-action
    instead!!!

Well guys i scored. I took a fine 13 pointer that dressed
at 202. I shot him in the liver and heart, he fell on the
spot. He has a 22 1/8 spread. Definatly the biggest of my
hunting caree. I was hunting a cedar swamp and he walked right
up on me...30 yds. I almost died when all i saw was RACK!!!!!

    CONGRATS JEFF!!!

A couple of friends of mine just got back this weekend from maine.
    5 guys hunting, 2 took bucks, 9pt 190 lb, and a 8 pt 185 lb....
after seeing how big a 200 lb deer is, i'd have to say most of the
ones I see in Vt are definately anorexic... incredible how big 200
lbs looks, can't imagine what the drag is like.

Better have a carpenter come in and reinforce that wall your planning
    on mounting it from... ;^)

    again congrats.... Fra
