Pat,
I'm pretty sure most of the turkey shoots are over. Seems 90% of
the clubs hold them in early October.
Ive always wondered why most shoots and other Field-Days are held
on week-ends during the peak of the Bird season. Wish they would
have all these events during September as not to take away weekend
hunting days. You would think the clubs would have more people attend.
Thus making more revenue for their club. Oh Well.

archery. I won't miss Shirley for sure. I'll try to get up to

| Does anyone hold real turkey shoots?
The turhy goes in a pen with sand bags high enough so only his head
can stick up, then you have to use a turky call to get him to stick
up his head and you get a quick shot at him with a rifle. I suppose
a pistol would work also.
Range 50 and 100 yrds.
Gee! What a novel Idea! I bet you could draw quite a crowd and the
turkey would be fresh!
I remember turky shoots alongside the roads in VA a few years ago
the would give you 1 shot of 12Ga , Your gun or there's at a paper
target at 30 yrds. Best Pattern Wins the round. $2. to shoot. 10
shooters per round. Prise is a frozzen turky about 10 lbs.
Profit was for the club .
What Fun! Walt

Hi Walt,
I haven't seen nor heard of a live turkey shoot. I doubt I could
even see a turkey's head at 100 yrds !!!!!
They do however have a contest at some of the shoots for best
pattern. I've seen this work a couple of different ways. One
is similar to what you've described. They have a big target
set up at 40 yrds and then they place a paper plate in the
center of the target. The person with the most pellets in the
paper plate wins. Another variation of this is....They set up
a large target and draw a pie on it that is divided into several
pieces. Each player buys a piece(s) of the pie. One shot is
then fired at the pie. The piece that has the most pellets in
it wins. There are many other contests at turkey shoots. There's
one called a quail walk. The shooter starts walking from the
27 yrd. line of the trap field with the gun held as if you were
hunting upland game birds. A target can come up at anytime between
the time you leave the 27 yrd. line and before you reach the
trap house. The shooter with the most targets broken wins. There's
another event called a sliding handicap. This one is intended
give everyone a chance. All shooters start shooting at 16 yrds.
If you win a turkey at 16 yrds, you are then moved to the 20
or 22yrd line. If you win there, you are then moved to 25yrds,
and then finally 27yrds. Another event is called the Lucky Target.
This event is like a normal round of trap except on target will
be a different color then all the rest. If the shooter that
is lucky enough to get this target thrown on their turn and
breaks it , that shooter wins, if the shooter misses, another
lucky target will be thrown during the round until someone wins.
Still another event is called a Protector. In this event, there
are normally two shooters on each trap station at 27 yrds. Each
team of shooters will alternate as to who calls for the target.
The person who calls for the target must shoot first. If that
person hits the target and that person's partner does not shoot
the target counts as dead, but if the partner shoots after the
target is broken it counts as a lost target. If the first shooter
misses and the partner breaks the target, it counts as dead.
If both shooters miss, it's a lost target. There's another
event where a line of shooters form behind the 27 yrd. line.
Each shooter will walk up call for their target and shoot. If
The shooter breaks the target, he then goes to the end of the
line. If he misses the target, he is out. This will continue
until there is only one shooter left. There's probably many
other turkey shoot events. Maybe some of the folks can add
more to the list of turkey shoot events.

266.8 | Shoot at Shirley, MA on Nov. 20 | ATSE::MARSHALL | | Tue Nov 15 1988 10:25 | 21 |
| Hi. I am the secretary of the Shirley Rod & Gun Club. We are having a
turkey shoot this Sunday, November 20 from 9 am to 4 PM. Events
include trap & skeet shooting, muzzle loader, lucky target .22, .22
pistol shooter, archery, .410 shoot, and raffles for turkeys.
Firearms and ammo are provided for events other than the trap and
skeet.
We are located on Kittredge Road off of Rt. 2A in Shirley, Mass..
There is a large sign with a fluorescent deer head on the sign.
Follow Kittredge Road for about a mile until you come to the clubhouse.
Major landmarks that you would pass include the Army Air Field on the
left if you are coming from Ayer and the Bull Run Restaurant on the
left if you are coming from the Lunenburg direction. Kittredge Road
is about halfway between each of those landmarks.
Food and drink will be served at the clubhouse. There will be plenty of
turkeys awarded and raffled off.
Hope to see you there.

| This shoot is open to the general public. In the past and again this
year, firearms have been supplied for the black powder, .410, and .22
shoots. I don't know if there are any rules against using your
own guns for those events. I've always worked in the kitchen or handed
out turkeys. If you like, I'll make some calls tonight to check on
that.
For skeet/trap, you use your own guns. As above, I don't know if there
is practice time before the shoots. I'll check on that tonight also.
I'll post my findings here tomorrow.
Good to see some interest in our shoot!

| Further info:
According to our club president, the club provides muzzle loaders,
.410s, and .22s for the shooters in order that no one would have an
unfair advantage in using his own firearm. I think that these events
generally use 20-25 yard targets. These events are mainly held for
fun and to expose people to different types of shooting. Turkeys are
awarded for winners though.
There are no practice rounds for either skeet/trap.
In the past this has been a very enjoyable event for the public. I
think some shooters stock their freezers for the winter with the
turkeys they win. I have personally handed out 6 turkeys to some
families that have excellent/or very lucky shooters in them.
Again, I welcome all who want to come to participate.
Thanks,
Ed Marshall
