264.0. "are lesser canada geese rare??" by CARLSN::STUART () Thu Oct 27 1988 12:03

    Got a question that the water foul hunters might be able to help
    with.

    Last evening after cribbing corn all day a farming friend and I
    went out to try our luck with geese. We dropped one and
    while showing it to another farmer he said that it was a "lesser
    canada" and I should mount it. Now, I am not primarily a water
    fouler, in fact, I much prefer furry to feathered critters but
    given the opportunity I will drop them. The question I have is
    why was he so insistent that it be mounted, are lessers rare or
    unusual? The bird weighs slightly over 7# and to me looks like
    a yearling canada. He explained that the bill is different, and
    they are slightly smaller than other canadas. Also, how many
    different canadas are there.

    Thanks in advance,

    Dick

    Dick,
    	I can't answer your question, but maybe you could ask the people
    in the Wild Bird conference. Just don't mention you shot it. Just
    say you spotted it.

264.2Lessers in ColoradoCSC32::G_ROBERTSMon Oct 31 1988 12:4610
    Dick,

   	The eastern plains of Colorado gets lots of lesser Canadas
	every fall, from 50,000 to 150,000 come through. We also
	get from 50,000 to 100,000 snows with them. The lessers
	and the snows average 7-10 pounds. The greater Canadas tend
	to hold up above Denver, they will go 20+ pounds.

264.3thanks...its being mountedCARLSN::STUARTTue Nov 01 1988 14:5010
    thanks, it would appear that along this flyway they are not
    rare but are a little "unusual". I tossed the whole bird in the
    freezer and am getting it mounted. This is my 2nd goose and the
    last one was a greater ( last year). It was tasty but probably
    should have made the attempt at skinning it to mount in addition
    to eating.
    I still have feathers all over the garage, house and basement and
    other places. Hard to believe there is that much fluff on one bird.
    Thanks again,
    ds
