235.0. "SPECIAL DEER FORECAST NOTE" by NEBVAX::PAPPALARDO (CLEVER PHARSE.) Fri Sep 30 1988 17:32
Found these stats of 1986. thought it might be of interest to some
of you. If you compare these with 1987 for your area you could get
a good idea of success. If you don't have 87s data the following
will still give you an idea as measuring wild-life is really difficult.
Just like any forecast at DEC take this info and what you know today
for your area and see what you come up with.
Question:: Anyone have the 87 results relating to the following?
If so put it in this note and lets see what we all come up with.
Could be educational as well as Fun as most of us wait for the firearm
season.

235.1 | Interesting Muzzleloader Data | DELNI::G_FISHER | | Mon Oct 03 1988 11:19 | 7 |
| Vermont's is low because it is a buck only season after rifle. Mass
is buck or doe for 3 days after their shotgun season. New Hampshire's
is a week (?), buck or doe before rifle season. I don't know about
Maine. I am surprised New Hampshire M/L isn't higher. I would expect the
muzzleloaders in N.H. to do really well.

235.2 | maine ml | DNEAST::VORHIS_AL | | Mon Oct 03 1988 13:17 | 3 |
| Maine ML season follows rifle season and is bucks only unless you
have a permit , if you tag out during rifle season in Maine you
are through for the year.

| Here is some more interesting information on the State of Maine.
This information was taken out of the Quarterly Magazine I recieved
from the Maine Fish & Wildlife.
For 1987 & for the top 60 Bucks in weight that were taken last year,
Most were taken the second week of the season, than the third week,
than, the first week, and than the last week. The weight facotrs
used for this measurment were between 238 to 289 pounds.
The weapons used for the above, it seems as if the 308 was the most
popular, than the good-ole 30-30, than the 30-06, and the rest were
a mix between the 35 Rem, the 270 Cal, and the 7mm, with 1 taken
with a 300 Weatherbee Mag.

235.5 | NH vs VT/ME | TWOBOS::LAFOSSE | | Thu Oct 06 1988 11:40 | 13 |
| excellent info... nice to see what's happening in the other states
I don't hunt.
further thoughts on the NH Muzzleloader take -vs- VT/ME
vermont is a bucks only muzzleloader, and in 86 the horns had to
be 6 inches or longer.... not sure about maine, but I would think
their using the bucks only rule also.
VT dropped the 6" rule in 87, but it's still bucks only... Ma and
NH your allowed to shoot does.

235.6 | Maine wardens NOT sure | DNEAST::MAHANEY_MIKE | | Fri Oct 07 1988 05:32 | 17 |
| I started muzzleloader hunting two years ago here in Maine.
I only get to hunt on the last day which is a Saturday and the season
is the week after regular firearm season. I wasn't sure what the
law was for what deer sex, so I called the F&G and asked if you could
shoot either sex or if it was bucks only. The first warden didn't
know and the second warden said yes you could shoot either sex.
When I asked to whom I was speaking to and if he was sure he said
"well let me check to be sure". I was again given to another warden
who was a higher ranked warden and he said that if you have a doe
permit from the regular firearm season and you hunt in the section
that it is good for than either sex is legal, otherwise its bucks
only. I was lucky enough to get a buck but the second year (last
year) I had to pass on two does. I beleive that the muzzleloaders
should be allowed either sex like the bow hunters are allowed
especially since they have been hunted for two months and are wary
and a lot less of.
