230.0. "Beware of Racoons" by FLYSQD::NIEMI () Tue Sep 27 1988 11:21

This is a notice that was read at roll call at the Natick Police
Department a couple of weeks ago. I thought you might want to know
about this with hunting season coming up fast.......

Division of Wildlife and Fisheries, sent a notice to the town clerk's
office stating that over half the racoon population in the New England
area are infected with a VERY DANGEROUS ROUNDWORM, it is
BAYLISASCARISPROCYONIS. It is easily transmitted to humans,
particularly children. It has caused BLINDNESS, and EVEN DEATH.
If you are sent on a racoon call use the snare in the truck. Do
not under any circumstances use your hands, or let the animal's
fur get on your clothing or skin. If anyone calls the desk for racoon
removal the numbers below are professionals who do remove these
    animals.

I have a family of raccoons living in the woods behind my house. I have
not had a problem with them yet. However, across the lake from me a
raccoon with rabies has been seen.

What I'd like to know is, what would be the best size round to kill a
raccoon, should the need arise ?

I have a 12 gauge shotgun and a .22 rifle. I was thinking that buck
shot might me good, but I have heard that the cops who are called
out to kill raccoons have been attacked because they're not using a
heavy enough load. One cop in Wayland shot a raccoon five times before
    it stopped.

BTW, I live out in the woods and the only house around for 1000 ft is
    mine.

If you can't "one shot" a coon with 00 buck, I'd move. Those gotta be some
damn big coons!

Two bad things about 00 buck. One if this is in MA you can't legally
shoot it unless it's at a deer during deer season or you're on
a range. Two, the pattern is terrible. You'd have to be real close
to hit him with more than a couple pellets if you were lucky. I'd
get a little closer and use #4 shot on him. he wont get up from that.

    re:3

I remembered that you can't use 00 buck outside of deer season in Mass.
last Friday when they busted a paramilitary group out in the Quabbin
area. One of the charges brought against them was that they had 00 buck
outside of deer season. Course they had grenade launchers and other stuff
    too, but that's another story.

I'll go with the #4 shot.

    Thanks
