228.0. ""RUBBING A RACK"" by BTO::STEVENS_J (Born on a mountain, Raised in a cave....) Tue Sep 20 1988 16:45

        Has anyone out there ever seen a buck rubbing his rack??
    I saw a 10 pointer on Sunday. I have never witnessed this before.
     I found it very interesting and wished i had my gun....

                  I would like to hear from any of you about this...

    Save the gun for later, there is a lot that deer can teach you
    about deer behavior that would take years of hunting to accumulate.
    Watch the same area when he goes into rut, start walking the general
    vicinity looking for other rubs and scrapes. Look around the scrapes
    for low hanging branches where the tips have been licked and small
    saplings that have the scent from the glands rubbed into them.
    Usually if you can find the spot where all or most of these things
    are found you have located one of the primary scrapes which he will
    visit at least every other day to "renew" and see if any does are
    in heat. It is quite a sight to watch them since they appear really
    pissed at that tree and attack it in ernest. You are sitting on
    a gold mine of deer savvy. By the way, taking the other half out
    to watch can get them interested in deer hunting too, gets them
    some woods walking experience while the weather is still moderate.

    happy hunting
