| The national wildlife federation is very much a pro hunting,
trapping, fishing, archery, what ever imaginal outdoor endeavor
where wildlife is harvested by and used within in the laws
of the states and federal goverment.
It is made up of sportsmen like myself and you who contribute money
for habitat presivation . They also have a slu of smaller state
associations that keep an eye out on all state laws.
In my opinion this is the most powerful and best organization
that a sportsman could belong to with the exception of the NRA.
If you want to find out what going on in state contact the local
state assocaition. I have been to many meetings over the last three
years and I am really impressed at the work they have done here
in the State Of New Hampshire....
I wished everyone who is truely interested in saving hunting and
saving Habitat would attend just three meetings to see and help
join the ranks of these hard workers.
This organization is essential if hunting is to survive ( at least
in New England).

185.3 | controversy re: NWF | SMURF::JUCH | | Thu Aug 11 1988 13:22 | 15 |
| Hi-
Bill Hanus identifies the NWF as the people who brought us steel
shot. He feels that they are no better than Friends of the Animals.
Rumor has it that their next move will be to agitate for steel shot
for all types of shooting.
I belong to Quail Unlimited, DU, and Ruffed Grouse Society. (and
NRA). I feel these others organizations DIRECTLY affect the sports
and species I participate in/with.
I'd ask some questions first.

185.4 | your point is well made.. | VELVET::GATH | | Thu Aug 11 1988 14:36 | 81 |
| I am not sure they brought us steel shot however you are correct
in that they did support steel shot.....
This is about the only issue that I may dissagree with them on..
( That I know of any way )
I say may because I still don't know if I am being brained washed.
I try to read both sides and I am not convinced that there are as
many deaths in waterfowl contributed to the injestion of lead shot.
My association with the state affiliate here in New Hampshire
is that they are the hardest working bunch of people I ever saw
trying to keep our local rights to fish, hunt and trap in the
state of New Hampshire..
They have waged some political battles that are on the scale with
the civil war and I think they have been effective...
They also have so many different issues that address that they are
extreemly undermaned...
Beleive me I have belonged to The Ruffed Grouse Society and ducks
unlimited and the state chapter in New Hampshire does all the
local work at our state house. If you enjoy hunting and you want
to see it for our children and there children then I suggest
you get involved.
They address The issues that pertain to the Fish and game dept.
Laws about hunting
laws about fishing
laws about trapping
laws about common land
enviromental considerations
obstruction on our rivers
public access
the list just goes on and on
it is made up of all the gun clubs and other interest groups in
the state.
such as some of the local clubs.
salmon unlimited
Tu
Bear hunters
wild turkey federation
trappers association
our club, your club. It is what we want it to be...
Canidly I personally don't agrree with every issue that the Nra
has stood for but I will say I am 100 % NRA. The Nra has seldom
compormises ( sp ). and here is purhaps where most of us at
one time our another would have given in... I for one am
glad the NRA takes such a hardline stance. Hell I would have given
in,
Purhaps this is what the National Wildlife Federation and many of
the states for that matter did was give in too soon and didn't question
the information as presented to us..
I think we all want whats best for the ducks its just too complicated
a issue to say hey this maney million die from this and if we
substitute this it will save that many million ducks.
Of course I live in area where the ducks are not concintrated to the
levels that we have a chance to observe the deaths by lead injestion.
To answer your question Bill, I beleive the National Wildlife
Federation is made up of sportsmen and purhaps this steel shot
issue is giant mistake. It however does not whipe out all the good
it has done and or will do for us. Why if we were to convince them
they were wrong they would work to undo it. I haven't heard too
convincing arguements against steel shot but there has been a lot
doubt cast upon the figures that were presented....
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Will we ever be required to use steel shot for upland game?
God I hope not. I don't think it could ever happen. But maybe
I am Niave.

185.5 | Ha! | DECWET::HELSEL | Legitimate sporting purpose | Tue Jun 19 1990 13:41 | 14 |
| I might as well update my experience with NWF. I had sent them the
check for the amount they requested back in 1988. They promise all
kinds of stuff including the standard magazine. About 6 months later
it occurred to me that I never got a response. So I sent a letter
with a copy of my cancelled check stating that I never got any type of
a response.....including the standard magazine.
Now, what?, another 18 months later........no response.
Do I have to tell you how I feel about them?
I hope they put my money to good use.
