177.0. ""EXPENSIVE PRESEASON SCOUT"" by RANGLY::MAHANEY_MIKE () Thu Jun 23 1988 07:19

I saw an interesting article in the Bangor Daily News yerterday.
The title was something like Moose Gets Even. What had happened
was that three from southern Maine men had gone to the Kokadjo area to
do some preseason scouting on the moose situation. Well, apparently
they couldn't wait until October and they dropped a yearling. They
proceeded to quarter the animal and was discovered by someone passing
by so they decided not to be to greedy and take what they had, which
amounted to about three quarters of it. They were headed towards
the Greenville area when they collided with a big moose which totaled
their vehicle. One fled to the woods and the other two were taken
to the local hospital for minor injuries and released. The wardens
were investigating the accident and discovered hair and blood on
the front of the car and the BACK of the car. In the meantime other
wardens were investigating the poaching scene and were talking to
the wardens at the accident and put two plus two together and found
the remains of the poached moose in the trunk of the car. All three
face a fine of $1000.00 plus a three day vacation in the slammer.
When Fish and Game officals were asked if the man with the permit
will be allowed to hunt in the moose season this October, they
    were undecided.

177.1UNDECIDED!!??BTO::REMILLARD_KThu Jun 23 1988 17:0920

Did I read you right, UNDECIDED? The Fish and Game Dept. should
visit the slammer for a few days with that attitude. In Vermont
I almost had to go to court because my duck blind wasn't properly
labeled. My stake (with name and address) was 2' from the unfinished
blind (they could tell who owned it, they called me...), sent me
a citation in the mail, that if convicted would loose my hunting
and fishing rights for 1 year...plus have a criminal record. It
was thrown out of court, but still.....all violations (Fish and
Game) in Vermont have a mandatory 1 year suspension of hunting and
fishing rights. I am suprised Maine doesn't have the same..?..

I'm not saying Vermont policy is right, I think there are some
violations that do not warrant suspension of rights...like not labeling
your duck blind, your fishing shanty, etc. I feel that if the
violation is against the animals of the State, then it should be
    mandatory.

In Maine I know that you stand a chance of losing your hunting
rights for such a violation. if its mandatory or not Iam not sure.
I do know of a person in which the Fish & Game was after for a long
time and when they finally nailed him they took everthing that was
involved in the poaching. The only bad thing was that he was borrowing
the truck from a friend of mine for a period of time and he lost
it for about three years. He also lost his firearm for good and
his right to hunt for a year , paid $500.00 and spent two days in
jail. Now it is $1000.00 for poaching deer and when they release
the first caribou next year they have a $10,000.00 figure on their
head for poachers. I really don't think that the person will be
huinting mooe this fall but by the time he gets to court plus if
he gets it postponed to a later date he may get to hunt since its
    only less than four months.

Kevin, what's the fine for shooting a moose out of season in
VT?? I don't believe it's as high as $1000. If you shoot a deer
out of season, they take your license away and slap you with something
like $200.. Even if they take your license away for a year, do
you think it will stop the slime who does this kind of thing anyway??
I have been reading a book on Whitetails and there's a section
on Poaching. From personal interviews with self-confessed poachers,
    they've gathered basically that once-a-poacher, always -a-poacher.
At least the guy was taking the meat. According to the book, there
are quite a bunch of slobs out there who view poaching in itself
as a sport and do it for kicks (something like 40% of all poachers).
They kill just to see "if they can hit it". Then leave it. In
many small towns across the country it's socially acceptable to
poach wildlife. Can you believe that??!! Socially acceptable to
break the law, not to mention that you're cheating the law-abiding
sportsman the opportunity a fair shake. Where are people's morals??
The anti's get ahold of this kind of stuff and people like
you and I have to answer and take the rap. I believe the state
should not take back burner on F&W laws and increase the maximum
penalties - ALL STATES! And enforce them by sticking the slimy
    fools with what they deserve!!
