The 257 Roberts, originally called the 25 Roberts, was developrd
by N.H. Roberts, a 1930's gun writer, and is based on the 7X57 Mauser
case. Remington offered the commercial round in 1934 under the name
257 Roberts, and it was one of the famous American sporting cartridges
for 20 years. It is a useful cartridge for both varmints and deer,
but its popularity plunged when the 243 Winchester and 6mm Remington
cartridges were introduced.
The 117-grain Roberts has about 1000 ft-lbs of energy at 200 yds,which
pretty much limits its range for deer hunting. In comparison, the
243 Winchester with a 100 grain bullet has 1330 ft. lbs of energy
at 200 yds with half the wind drift of the Roberts.
Bullet Diameter: .257 inch
Bullet weight range: 87 to 117 grains for commercial cartridges
Standard rifling twist: 1 in 10 inches
Accuracy:: The most accurate muzzle velocity for reloaders is said
to be about 2650 feet per second for the 117 gr. bullet.
Hunting Use:: The cartridge is a fine varmint round when 60 to 90
grain bullets are used and is excellent for deer size game with
bullets of more than 100 grains.
Reloaders:: Various wildcat cartridges, called 257 Roberts Improved,
are popular. These increase case capacity by increasing the shoulder
angle, the greater powder load improves the ballistics. Reloaders
can select bullets from 60 to 125 grains.
Sight in for 3.7 inches at 100 yds. The bullet reaches 4 inches
above line of sight at 128 yds, crosses line of sight at 232 yds,
and is 4 inches low at 270 yds. This sight in is suitable for hunting
deer and antelope.
