154.0. "Dog for Adoption" by LIONEL::SAISI () Mon Apr 11 1988 13:36

There is a blue tick hound available for adoption from the
Lowell Humane Society in Lowell, MA. I posted this in CANINE
but thought of posting it here, since these dogs are useful
for hunting raccoons and other varmi'ts. It is an adult
female weight about 65 pounds I would guess, good natured.
I wouldn't mention it if you plan to use the dog for hunting,
because some places take a dim view of that ( they think that
hunters have no relationship with their dogs, just think of
them the same way they think of their shotgun ).

The Lowell Humane Society is open from 9-4:30 M-Sat, and has
evening hours on Wed. from 6:30-9pm. The cost of adoption
is $50 for a purebred, and $25 for a mixed breed dog or puppy.
They also have cats and kittens. The location is Broadway
Street near the Univ of Lowell South Campus ( on the river ).
	The number is (617)452-7781.

	Directions:
From 495 take the Lowell Connector, and exit onto
Thorndike St.. Follow this to Broadway ( the second major
intersection I believe ). Turn left on Broadway, and go to
	the end.

Got some more info on this dog, it is a male, not a female,
1 1/2 years old, has a lovely bay, which is I imagine
why he is in there, the notice said the landlord vetoed the
    	dog.

Why is there a $25.00 difference between a purebred and mixed?
Adoption is Adoption, the paper wokk is the same!
I though they just wanted to find good homes not make money?
    Thats UNBELIEVABLE.

They need all the money they can get since they don't get any
state or federal funds, and probably feel that people will be
more willing to pay that amount for a purebred dog. Both prices
are pretty low, and if you compare it to the supplies, food,
    	and vet bills, probably trivial.
( But you are right, it does imply that the mutts aren't
    	"worth" as much. )

They may also feel that purebreds reproduce to type. That is a
German Shepard will most likely, if really a purebred, carry shepard
traits. If you are looking for a particular type you pay more.

BTW if you think 25 or 30 dollars is high, please don't look for
    a purebred from a breeder.

    One Man's opinion, thanks.

If you buy from the humane society you do not get papers, no papers
you never really no. The dog is only good for a pet, yes they may
hunt and be good at it but without papers they have on real market
    value.

BTW if I wanted a purebred then I would go to a breeder! BUT if
I wanted a PET then I would go to the pound and give a dog a home.
