140.0. "Falconry anyone ?" by POWDAH::MCCARTHY (Give every man his Dew) Mon Mar 14 1988 20:53

Does/has anyone in this notes file ever hunted with falcons ? What about
the "modern day" legalities of hunting "with" birds ?
On another note, has anyone else noticed the vast increase of hawks in the
Massachusetts and New Hampshire areas in the past few years ? Today, out in
the parking lot of NRO were a pair of hawks circling around the edge of the
parking lot "hunting" for food. A beautiful sight to behold considering hawks
were almost extinct in the Northeast only a few years ago. I seem to see them
almost daily these days when traveling along the major highways. They seem to
like the median strips for their meals.

140.1Falcons Legal in ColoradoGENRAL::BOURBEAUTue Mar 15 1988 10:138
    	I don't know much about falconry,but I do know that it's legal
here in Colorado, and that there are several clubs who hunt with
falcons. The Air Force Academy's mascot is the falcon, and they have
and train several of them. They fly them at half-time in the stadium
    at their football games.

My neighbor is one of the "three Licensed Falconers"(?) in the
state of Maine.. He brought the bird from Oklahoma (sp?) where he
used it for pheasants. He now hunts (?) ducks on the Scarborough
Marsh. He is restricted to hunting in season... I have had the pleasure
of releasing pigeons for exercise...Boy! Are those buggers fast..
and do they have weapons. A seven pound female has talons the size
of a average womans hand....Take a look. After soaring on the
sea-breeze at about 500 feet, She tucks her wings and dives almost
vertically and when she hits... my 12ga. doesn't do that to a bird.

You can't find a better retriever either. But, if I fed every fourth
bird to Beth (GSP dog) she would be motivated too!

I have a video tape. interested?

    Jack,
I went to college with Maine, a friend of mine had a couple
of hawks that he hunted with. His name was Kent ???? Im curious
if the guy you know is the same person. We use to fly the birds
around Portland. It is alot of fun. We use to get squirrels and
rabbits. I think that this guy was originally from around Ct, but
I'm not sure. I must be getting old.....my memory is failing.
Neat sport but it takes ALOT of work.

140.4Falconer nearby!MTBLUE::SCHNEIDER_JAFri Mar 18 1988 13:3015
Jeff, this person's name is Dr. David Eflicher... He's a
Dermatologist in the Portland Medical center. The Bird he flies
is a 6 year old Perigrine Falcon... He flies Females as they are
1-2 lbs larger than males... a male would have a problem with ducks
(not the kill but the retrieve..)being larger than they are.. the
principal food for City Resident Peri's is the common pigeon..
in the rural area's most small birds are fair "game" Falcons only
    hunt birds...
Mic used to hunt with DOG-Bird combinations...Well trained English
setters (Buck and Mac) in the fields or on the periphery of
ponds, estuarys, streams etc. It was something to see the Falcon
track the dogs as they scented the birds... Some things about hunting
    are Beautiful!!!!
