| I MYSELF AM A GUIDE AND YES I DID SEE THE TAIL END OF THE NEWS
TO SEE WHAT THESE POACHERS ARE DOING. I AM ALSO GLAD THAT THE GUIDES
DID GET ARRESTED TOO. PEOPLE DON'T REALIZE HOW MUCH POACHING AND
SELLING OF BIG GAME REALLY GOES ON IN THIS COUNTRY. I HAVE BEEN
APPROACHED BY SPORTS TO BUY BEAR AND DEER WHILE THEY SAT AT CAMP
AND DRANK BEER. I REFUSED AND DIDN'T WANT ANY PART OF IT. BUT JUST
IMAGINE HOW MANY GUIDES REALLY DO THIS KIND OF THING. I THINK THESE
GUYS SHOULD GET A MINIMUM OF A YEAR IN PRISON AND UP TO 5 YEARS
IF IT INVOLVES AN ORGANIZED GROUP. WE AS SPORTSMAN PAY OUT ALL THIS
MONEY FOR LICENSES AND MEMBERSHIPS FOR GAME MANAGEMENT AND THESE
POACHERS TAKE WHATS OURS. SO IF YOUR AMONG THE MANY WHO DIDN'T GET
A BEAR OR DEER OR ELK THIS YEAR YOU CAN THANK YOUR FRIENDLY POACHER,
TO ME THIS P-O'S ME MORE THAN IF SOMEONE WHERE TO STEAL MY VEHICLE
OR SOMETHING. SO LETS DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. IN MAINE WE HAVE A
NEW "ALERT US" PROGRAM, WITH A 1-800 NUMBER HOT-LINE. AND IT IS
PROVING VERY EFFECTIVE.

| I agree 100% Massachusetts also has a 1-800 number to report game
violations. It's our responsibility as sportsmen to report poachers
and other game law violators.

| N.H. Fish and Game used to have an 800 number but it's no longer
available. To report offences you should call 603-271-3421 and ask
for the game enforcement division. Is it legal to poach a poacher....?

| There was a country store in Northboro MA where the owner was arrested when
the authorities found 70 undocumented whitetail dear carcasses in the guy's
freezer along with bear and moose. Made me sick when I heard it a few years
back. I've seen some other bizzare things too, like a hunter shooting a deer
across a major highway, headlight hunting at night and have run across more
than one 'baited' area where it ain't allowed.

135.6 | an interesting article | CSC32::J_HENSON | Blessed are the cheese makers | Tue Mar 31 1992 11:25 | 13 |
| I just finished reading an article about poaching in Alaska. The
author explains that it is a very serious problem and expresses a
concern that, if not stopped, it will soon wipe out the game
populations in the state. He also discusses Alaska's airborne
game patrols, and how they have had some measure of success.
However, he makes a big point of how they are way underbudgeted.
Very interesting reading.
Jerry
P.S. Oh yeah, the author is Russel Annabel. The story appears in
the Jan. 1, 1949 issue of the _Saturday_Evening_Post_.

Did anyone happen to see the show day one last night? they had did
an article about poaching in our national forests, yellowstone mostly.
They actually went to one of the ALLEDGED poachers house to interview
him and he seemed to be quite arrogant about in and really made a game
of the questions asked.
they showed video of him shooting some nice elk, one even had 2
arrows in it and then he shot it a third time, of course its easy to
shoot animals that are almost tame since they see humans every day. I
didnt really get the impression of the day one reporter slamming
hunters but they tried to make the point that this guy was a slob
hunter. the best line was something like you call yourself a sportsman
when you go into a national park and make it your private hunting
preseve!
He apparently wanted to market the tapes of the hunts, he wanted
to be honored as one of the greatest north american hunters. he even
bragged in a letter to a sponser that he had a grand slam under his
belt and had harvested 27 big game species!!! all illegally no doubt!
discuss.......

I didn't see the show (can't stand the mistruths).
If the guy is a poacher he is NOT a hunter he is a criminal and belongs
in the BIG house with all the other of his type!
If he is a poacher and they give the impression that he is a hunter
that is a slam to all legal hunters, what is a non-hunter to think when
see's us all lumped together under the name..
Just my 2 cents
