124.0. "Great lakes whitetails/Canadian caribou" by WHTAIL::BRYAN () Sat Jan 30 1988 00:10

Since I didn't get any response in the archery notes file, I thought
I'd give it a shot here.

I'm hoping someone out there might be able to give me some help
on narrowing down the choices of where to bowhunt this fall. I'd
like to try anywhere from Ohio to Wisconsin, and was hoping
somebody out there might have some thoughts on one state over the
other, better areas, guides (if necessary),etc. Any help would be
    appreciated.

Also, tips anyone with experience hunting caribou in Quebec (or any
other province) might have would also be appreciated. All the
brochures I've seen make it look like most of them are shot on
open plains. Is it possible to successfully hunt them with bow??

    Thanks for any help!!!!!

I recently sent for brochures for hunting whitetail on Anticosti
Island in Quebec. I also recieved itinerary on a caribou package
in Quebec. If your interested give me your name and mail stop, and
    I'll send it to you.

Also I hunted New Jersey 2 years ago for bow, and saw lots of action!
They have the most liberal bag limit within reach (4) for bow hunting
with a good amount of public land available. What's the entry for
    the archery notes file?
124.2MAINE GUIDEMTBLUE::LABBE_RICKThu Feb 04 1988 02:088
I AM A GUIDE UP IN CENTRAL MAINE AND I SPECIALIZE IN BEAR AND DEER
HUNTING, MAINLY BOW AND ARROW FOR DEER. LAST FALL WE HAD A 100%
KILL RATE ON DEER. THE DEER POPULATION IS VERY HEAVY WHERE I GUIDE
AND HUNTERS HAVEN'T HAD A PROBLEM FINDING PLENTY OF DEER. IF YOUR
INTERESTED IN HUNTING IN MAINE IN A MIXED FARMLAND BUT RUGGED WOODS
WIZE AREA GIVE ME YOUR ADDRESS AND I'LL SEND YOU A FREE BROCHURE.

I have had the good fortune to take two trips to the Ungava Bay
region of Quebec. My partner and I hunted caribou out of Finger
Lake Lodge which resides slightly above treeline on the Canadian
Tundra. It is entirely possible to have caribou look in yor lodge
windows, when the heard does migrate through it is spectacular.
They are literally everywhere. ***HOWEVER*** - when they aren't
in your area remember, there are millions of acrea of NOTHING up
there and you might go all the way to Russia before seeing anything.
I hunted with the bow and rifle, I took two animals but neither
would qualify for any record book. I passed on MANY animals with
the bow hoping to find a really big one. Shots can be close, the
caribou tend to follow well defined trails but finding sufficient
cover is the problem up on the tundra. Most shots will be out around
40 - 60+ yards and more than likely at walking animals ( they don't
run a lot from what I saw ). Caribou don't take a lot of killing,
they seem rather fragile ( mine went easily ). The meat is absolutely
delicious!! I will go back some day, no doubt.
Also bring your fishing gear if you go, there is excellent char
and trout fishing all over that area.
Of course, it will always rain/sleet/snow while you are there so
GORETEX/Thinsulate clothing and good boots are a must.

     good hunting,

A very good place to bow hunt whitetail is in west Michigan, in
fact all over Michigan. We have a large population and I have a
friend, my former manager, who always gets 2 bucks with bow each
year. If you want to come out to Michigan, send me a vaxmail and
I'll get you in contact with my buddy. I don't yet bowhunt, just
rifle, but hope to some year.
124.5A Second Vote For MichiganWILLEE::MANLEYThu Aug 31 1989 17:106
I'll second Michigan. Try anywhere along M31 between Travers City
and Petosky. There are tons of fruit orcherds along that strip and
I'm sure that the farmers would be more then happy to have you thin
    out the herd for them.

    Tom,
