| Hey how about some help this year guys.
Last year we had a great time and we decided to team up.
The old dead eye and I saw a (too many ) chips were
the winners.
Over the years I have heard that there were some pretty good
shots in these notes files ( here and Firearms ) but so
far it turns out that most of these guys are paper Lions.
OK I won't pass judgment just yet but this will be your last opertunity
to redeam ( sp ) yourselves.
It will be a great time and if you have never shot sporting
clays it will be a great experience.
If you need more information about sporting clays pls. read
note 623 ( I think) in the firearms note file.
Now I have shot with some of you before and I know you all
could help me beat old dead eye & I saw ( Too many ) chips.

| Well just set the date and time and I'll see if it's ok with the
boss (wife)! Best time is on a weekend of course. Saturday mornings
the best but anytime really. If it's Sunday morn I'll even go to
church the night before so I can make it.

I've managed to convince two guys I work with that they
really should try this, so up the count by two.
Now when are we gonna have at it ??? Sunday mornings (except
the last Sunday morning of the month) are best for me. But I'm
flexible. Lets do it sometime soon. Brett was right about February
being a boring month, we need something to liven it up a bit.

up for organizd shooting, but this sounds like it might be interesting.
Sounds like it could be a good time. Is this as opposed to
"Un-Sporting Clays" or do you guys give them a "sporting" chance.
Reminds me of the Sports writer back in the sixties (from California,
where else?) who wrote an unfavorable article about those merciless
people who go out every weekend and shoot hundreds of Skeets. He
didn't feel that was avery humane thing to do at all. Turns out
that he actually did think that people where shooting real birds.
Last I knew he was on the unemployment line but had an interview
scheduled with Ruppert Murdock.

Just a couple of questions for us novices.
I've got a Remington 870 with 26" barrel and Remchoke for full,
modified and improved cylinder. What kind of ammo should I bring?
(I have some #4 buckshot rounds, are these ok?) (just kidding!)
Any other things I should know about before I come there, like where
the heck is this place? What kind of clothes should I where? I
picture it as being as close to hunting as you can get without actually
needing a license. Will we be dodging swamps and fording streams
or is there a regular course with dry paths to each firing position?
I mean like I really have no idea what I'll run into. I need help!

As for guns to use. I'm gonna shoot my 12ga. with improved cylinder

I'll be going up from Lunenburg. I have an eight passenger wagon

If you know where the Wallace Civic Center is in Fitchburg

it would be a good pick-up/meeting point.
I need directions from 119 Ashby or maybe I can meet Uncle Mike

there a reduced price for multiple rounds ????

I told them that we would be there at 9:30. Directions are as follows:
Take rt.124 into New Ipswich, NH.
In center of town, take a right at the New Ipswich Market.
Aprox. 1/2 mile up rd take a left (5th rd on left, Temple Rd, theres
a brick colonial at the road).
The SkAT club is 1/2 mile up on the right.
If you get lost _call_ , the number is 603-878-1257. They said
there use to "finding" lost shooters 8*).
I figure on shooting two rounds. Bring lots of shells and your
lucky rabbits foot.

Jeff this sounds like a super idea ! I'll be there on the 13th.
I have some questions concerning how things will be organized .
1) will we be shooting as teams as we did last year ?
2) if so, how many people on each team ?
3) how many people will be on each squad ?
4) how close can each squad follow each other ?
I know that if it's someone's first time out, they may
require some instruction on the course etc. which will
involve some added time. Another consideration may be
someone arriving at 9:30 and not shooting till 11:30.
Maybe if squads are put together previous to the shoot,
the later squads can arrive a little bit later. These are
just some considerations that I thought may help our shoot
go a little smoother.

| Good questions, Pat. Im open to anything that the majority can
agree upon. I figure we'll have somewhere between 12 to 16 people
shooting. How about I propose a format and you guys decide whether
or not you like it? Here goes.
1) will we be shooting as teams?
How about everyone pick a partner? or we can draw names from
a hat? If we shoot as teams it tends to make it more fun.
2) How many on a team?
Two
3) How many on a squad?
Four, anymore and it tends to get crowded.
4) How close can one squad follow another?
Don't know, but I'll find out.
We can also shoot for individual honors. Remember this only for
bragging rights. The only mandatory rule is that everyone enjoys
themselves and that no one takes it too seriously.
Once we have squads set up, I'll post starting times so that those
who are not on the first squads can take there time getting there.
Let me know your ideas and what yo think of the proposed "rules".
If you like the idea of picking partners, reply with who you would
like to shoot with.

118.27 | ex | BPOV09::JAMBERSON | | Mon Feb 01 1988 10:55 | 11 |
| Another thought on how we should do this:
How about we forget the teams and shoot as individuals? That way
those who are coming alone won't have to worry about finding a partner.
Im gonna try and set up the squads so that each squad has someone
on it who has shot the course before. That way they can explain
things as you go through the course. It sounds like we can have
a squad on each station through out the course, so things should
move pretty quickly. There shouldn't be alot of waiting etc...

118.31 | A few suggestions and hints... | SHOOTR::AHO | Uncle Mike | Mon Feb 08 1988 13:09 | 36 |
|
Here's a few "Hints" for the Shoot on Saturday:
1) Shooting Glasses are STRONGLY recommended
2) Hearing protections is also STRONGLY recommended
3) Bring something to carry shells in (gym bag, shell bag, etc)
(This is in ADDITION to a vest or coat, as you will
be walking around a course that is approx. 3/4 mile in length and
50 + shells in a vest can be AWFUL cumbersome.)
4) Since it may be Cold, bring warm enough clothes, gloves, etc.
5) Guns WILL be carried open and unloaded from station to
station.
6) Bring extra shells as you may get broken birds, etc. and
you will be able to shoot the "pair" or bird over again.
(2 "Rounds" = 100 shells). I'd bring at least 125.
7) Reminder: You will be shooting "Low Gun" (as in hunting).
8) The "Trap person" will explain the station you will
shoot at and the shooting order is "Alternating".
Example:
Station 1 Station 2 Station 3 ETC...
Shooter A Shooter B Shooter C
Shooter B Shooter C Shooter D
Shooter C Shooter D Shooter A
Shooter D Shooter A Shooter B
9) HAVE FUN and I'll be looking forward to seeing you there..

| Looks like were all set for this weekend. Hope that everyone is
still planning on shooting. Note 118.20 has the squads, but that
can be changed if the need arises. Please let me know if your on
the list and CAN"T make it. I want to call SKAT and give them a
close estimate of how many of us to expect so that they can plan
on having enough trapboys. Try to be there by 9:15.
Some things to think about and remember:
***TREAT YOUR GUN AS IF IT'S ALWAYS LOADED***
Dont point it anything your not prepared to shoot.
Keep the action open and unloaded at all times except when you are
the individual shooting and are in position (on the "pad").
Open your action and unload the gun BEFORE leaving the pad.
Load the gun once you are on the pad, not before.
Please observe all posted rules, and THINK safety at all times.
Have a good time.
Mike made some great suggestions in .31, it might pay for everyone
to re-read his note. If anyone has any questions, just ask.
See you all on Saturday.

Well it looks like there talking a foot plus of snow in SKAT
course area. If this happens I don,t see how tony will be able to
clear all his trails, traps and shooting stations by early saturday,
the storm may not stop till then.
We may want to set up some sort of alternate date or time. A
lot of us may be pretty tied up digging out on saturday morning
if this storm turns out as big as they say it will be.

| Well, eleven brave souls managed to make it uo to New Ipswich to
shoot on Saturday. The conditions were less then ideal (cold and
the wind was blowing). We got a bit of a late start, waiting for
folks to arrive and Tony to plow out the traps. For those who are
interested, I posted the scores below.
Name wobble score sporting clays score total
(possible 25) (possible 50) (possible 75)
Mike A. 19 23 42
Bill J. 10 27 37
Jeff A. 17 28 45
Dave N. 8 9 17
Bear 14 26 40
Alan W. 16 10 26
Roy 4 4 8
Guy F. 13 23 36
Paul 9 12 21
Dave R. 16 17 33
Dave P. 12 13 25
In talking with Tony (the owner), he stated that anyone who shoots
better then 30% for there first attempt at this should be proud.
The average score is somewhere arround 20-25%. Just want to thank
all those that braved the weather to show up and hope that all had
a good time. Anyone ready for a _SPRING_ shoot???

118.41 | This is a really sad tale... | LILAC::MKPROJ | REAGAN::ZORE | Wed Feb 17 1988 09:05 | 18 |
| Well I got the car loaded Friday night during the storm. Woke up
Saturday to 15" of frozen snow (it had been 17" on Friday night
but we had some rain at the very end I guess and it was knocked
down to 15"). I dug the car out, made sure there was plenty of
wood in the kitchen for the wife and kids, jumped into the car and
took off down the drive. I was scrapping the underside of the car
all the way down the drive (my drive is a 10th of a mile long) and
was just about to make it to the straightaway when I spied the 4'
ridge of snow plowed up by my neighbor at (what turned out to be)
3AM that morning. He had started to plow the drive when he came
home from plowing other places and only made it about 15 yards into
the drive. The rain soaked snow stopped him cold and he could go
no further. I was faced with a roadblock of solid snow and ice
4' high. I contemplated digging it out but that would have taken
hours. So I sadly trudged up the hill, shotgun in hand to face
the list of chores my wife had in hand. :-(

Well, I finally tried Sporting Clays. Went to SCaT with a friend
who is in town from Alabama.
Anyway, this is a tought sport. Lots tougher than trap/skeet. Tony,
the owner is great.
We went to the first station, I got 2 out of 6, my friend none. He is
a skeet shooter (averages about 20/25). Tony made us an offer we
could not refuse. We pay for shells/targets and he will give us a
free lesson. Then we can return to the sporting clays.
Tony found several problems with my shooting, everything from gun
mount to both eyes open. After spending about 1+ hours on the
skeet range with us we returned to teh sporting clays.
The first station I was having trouble pickin up the bird so I missed
all of them. Then we moved to a doubles station, both birds coming
from behind and to the right. Only once out of about 8 doubles did I
miss both. Twice I got both!!!! I was excited about this.
Then we moved to rabbits, spent alot of time here since my buddy
was having lots of trouble. I was hitting about 3 out of 4 of
the little round bunnies. Tony then added a twist. After you shoot
the rabbit, he launched a bird. I always hit one, got both several
times.
Overall, it was great, I highly recommend it, and Tony is a great
shooting instructor and an all around good guy.
The deal he gave us was great, we fired probably 75 shots at shooting
clays and maybe 50 more during the lessons, all for what I consider
a small charge.
Great way to spend a morning.
