111.0. "NEW FEDERAL 12 GA. SHOTSHELL?" by VELVET::GATH () Mon Jan 11 1988 11:57

This past weekend I was perusing a Guns and Ammo when in the
center of the magazine there were 7 or so pages of advertisement
on the new 1988 Mossberg line.

I have never really been a Mossberg fan or a pump shotgun fan but
I am slowly considering a new gun for water fowl and since I
hope to do some hunting in the harsh coastal environment and with
the new steel shot regulations a pump and yes even a Mossberg is
being considered. This is not to benign Mossberg owners. It is my
opinion. Mossberg's have been very practical but for myself I
always enjoyed nice wood and hand checkering and just all the
polish that you sometimes pay up to 30 or 50 % more for in other
guns that do not necessary make them shoot any better.

Mossberg isn't completely out of the question. After all they did
pick up many of the Smith and Wesson's line and I personally
believe they are really trying to provide the American gunner
with a quality product at a reasonable price and it seems to be
that have been adding some of the polish as they go along.

At any rate, I was reading all the details when low and behold
they have this 12 ga. pump chambered for the new Federal
3 1/2 inch 12 ga cartridge.

That's Right a 3 1/2 inch 12 ga. ( This really stunned me )

I was leaning toward getting 10 gauge because of the perceived
lack of killing power of steel shot on ducks and Geese.

But this has changed my whole perspective..

Have any of you heard of this??? Please post all new
developments on this new shot shell in this file .

Thankyou, Bear

111.1Federal has many tricks...SMURF::JUCHMon Jan 11 1988 12:428
    This new shell is news to me.  I have the name of someone at Federal;
I'll try and call and find out. By the way, have you heard of the
Premium line being extended to 28 gauge?

I use a S&W 1000, which is now Mossberg, that I use for steel shot
(mod. choke, 3" chambers) and salt water. It performs admirably.

    Bill
111.2Pre announcment in firearms industry. NO..VELVET::GATHMon Jan 11 1988 13:4849
I suspect the announcement might be made at this years shot show.
This is where all just about all the industry announcements are
    made.
I also suspect that Mossberg had inside info and went ahead and
did some advertizing before the product is available.

I kinda remember some of the firearms I was looking at; saying something
like available soon or available in 1988.

At any rate I had never in my wildest dreams , thought why don't
    they make a 3 1/2 inch 12 ga.

Yes the Smith and Wesson 1000 in a skeet grade got really good
reviews. It also performed admirably with out break downs.

I beleive the New Mossberg has either been redesigned this year
or they modified the 1000 enought to offer this as a New Mossberg
    Auto.

Bill, I was trying to understand your comment there " Premium
line being extended to 28 gauge?"

    I got it.

The federal Premium ( copper plated ) shot shell is now being
    offered in 28 ga. Hmm.

I knew that Federal constantly tries hard by inovation to
keep it place in the shotshell market. There are few devoted
28 ga hunters and this just go to show you that federal
is trying to please every Faccet of shotgunning by going
after those mostly forgotten souls who might use something
    other than a 12 or 20 ga.

    Federal keeps trying.

Personally, I would reload all 28 gauge hunting loads with
copper plated shot. But not every one has a 28 gauge loader.

    Bear,

p.s. Bill if you are going to talk to someone from Federal would
you see why federal doesn't offer a 1 piece plastic shot shell
hull in 20 ga, 28 ga, and 410. The paper base wadds in these hulls
worry me. I reload them, but reluctantly.

111.3Mossberg's in generalHITEST::TESTAGROSSATue Jan 12 1988 14:3044
Bear, I purchased a Mosseberg 12 ga. 3in. chamber the spring before
last. I wanted the 3in. chamber for the new Turkey loads being offered
and I also figured it would prove to be a good chamber for both
    buck shot and slugs.

Well I got myself through the knothole of looking at the gun cause
they aren't pretty. But then when I shot it the gun didn't want
to lock the shells into the chamber. I narrowed the problem down
to only happening when the deerslayer barrel was installed. So I
had thoughts of living with deerhunting with the vent rib, replacable
choke barrel that I also purchased. Well I had another problem ejecting
the 3in. shells with either barrel in place. They didn't always
eject cleanly, I had to actually pry some of them out after I shot.
The crimped end of the shell would get hung up on the way out.
By this time I was pissed! I also thought the sights on the deerslayer
barrel sucked! There was very little adjustment available, and the
set-up is real Mickey Mouse. Then as the gun in general goes, its
inexpensive cause thats the way its built! Check the thickness of
the barrel compared to ANY other popular make, its real thin.

I was wooed into the gun probably the same way that you are. I had
a special purpose in mind, and thought that it would do the job.
Well it didn't. I ended up selling the thing a month after I bought
it for 40 bucks less than I paid just to get rid of the headache!

As a suggestion, Remington offers an 870 special, which is less
of a gun cosmetically(checkering, polished bluing), without compromising
the functional quality of the gun, and made it more affordable. This
    gun come standard 3in. chamber!

The set-up cost me 200+ tax with deerslayer barrel standard, and
I purchased a 30 in. vent rib, modified choke barrel for an xtra
    100. Its twice what you'll pay for the Mossberg, but in my opinion
    its well worth it!

Hey, could you give me the name of the outfitters and answer my
latest entry to 107 when you have a chance? I'm serious about Anticosti
and it seems you had more info on it than most. Thanks

I got a brochure from one outfitter already and he wants 1200 plus
you have to pay for meals. I'd like to try to do better than that
if possible, somewhere between 800-1000. I wouldn't mind roughing
it, the brochures showed pretty plush accomodations. I don't feel
I really need!(or want to pay for) Thanks
