104.0. "Who's your Favorite Taxidermist" by CAD::BROPHY () Tue Dec 22 1987 14:15

    Hi All,
I have searched throught the file looking for taxidermist and have
come up blank so here goes. I have 2 drake Woodies I would like
to have mounted. I live in Marlboro Mass and have never had any
animals stuffed so I am not really sure what to look for, so I am
soliciting you folks for recmondations. Who's you favorite
taxidermist? What should I expect to pay to have a bird mounted?
Is there anything (or anyone) I should stay clear from? Any and
    all comments will be appriciated.

    Thanks for the help
    Mike

I went to Wilder's in North Chelmsford. Several friends have gone
to him and were quite satisfied. He is quick and not as expensive
as most. He's charging me $225 for a full shoulder mount of a seven
point buck. Also does fish, ducks, etc.

I also use Wilder's for all my mounts. He really does some nice
work, the prices are reasonable and you don't have to wait forever
to get your mounts back. He's done all my mounts for the past few
    years.

Well, this is for NH folks, or those who want to drop off an
animal on their way to Riley's :-)

There are two in the southern NH area that I can recommend.
There's Wildlife Taxidermy in Manchester. It's very easy to find.
Take exit 1 off of rte 101 and go south on the 28 bypass. He's a
stones throw from 101 at the Massabesic circle. I've had a deer
hide done by them. It came out super! Also one of my hunting partners
has had a full bear mount and a shoulder mounted 8 pointer done
there. Absolutely beautiful work! There's even a nice sport shop
and archery shop there and their prices are pretty good...

      There's also Phillip's Taxidermists in Litchfield. I've had a
neck mounted deer done there along with a couple of deer foot
gun racks and a hide and they all came out super...

So, for you folks in the southern NH area, you can't go wrong
with these two places. If I had to choose and I didn't mind the
wait (up to a year for a deer head mount) It would be Wildlife
    Taxidermy "by a nose"
104.6ART FAYTANRPUR::ZEREGAWed Dec 23 1987 11:398
My vote goes to Art Fayta, he is located in Portland Maine right
off the pike. He started working with ED Shaw back in the early
60's, opened his own business in the early 70's, moved to maine
in 1980. Maybe you have to travel a little but why take chances
on a once in a lifetime trophy. he takes about a year to finish
a head, but you will have a lifetime of pleasure. His prices are
competitve, only problem is that he works mostly on larle game,
    so call before you go.

    re:5
I'll second that. He did a nice green head (mallard) for me that
came out excellent. At the time, he was almost half the price of
Wildlife taxadermy. I haven't had anything done recently so I don't
know what his prices are now.

You may want to call Bill Minior. Bill is a wildlife biologist at
the Fish and Game headquarters in Westboro. He does excellent work
    at a very good price.

He did a drake woodie for me a couple of years back and it is
    beautiful.

Call the Wildlife headquarters at 366-4470 or 4479.

    Tell him I sent you.

I am a reg. maine giude. my hunters kill alot of trophy game and
I would recommend DAVE COTE who is located in SO.VASSALBORO MAINE
He has done 5 deer heads for me and several bear rugs I have taken
and is by far the best work I've seen around. he is resonably fast
and can ship your heads out anywhere to the hunters when they are
completed. also the Maine Sportsman Show in Augusta has an annual
competition in which Dave does extremely well in. for more info
call Dave cote at (207) 622-7668 or write to me by mail and I can
    give you some additional information.

If you are ever in the Northwest part of Montana or Idaho
and you score the big trophy, here is one you might consider.

    Steve Melton
    172 Mill Road
    Mullan Idaho, 83846

    (208) 744-1549

I was hunting in Montana last fall and scored a real nice Antelope buck.
We were on our way to Idaho to hunt Elk and we were driving around
with this frozen Antelope head/cape. The story is long and funny
and sounds like something out of Green Acres complete with the
protocol involving the one-antlered deer, but I found Steve in
Mullan. He took my cape and said he would call me in about
four months when it is done and he'd ship it.

WOW! The whole thing cost me $175, which I know is a steal. The
job is first rate. It is nothing short of beautiful! Needless to
say I am a satisfied customer. He shipped the head in a crate that
could have survived a nuclear attack. The shape of the cast is
    perfect.

I have his 89 price list and it is unreal. Deer mounts cost $195.
He'll even do a lifesize on the hoof mount for $400. He has a
lifesize Elk mount that must stand 8 feet tall. What a beauty!
And then there is the one-antler deer.

If you are ever in Mullan, I encourage you to stop by and say "hello".
Tell Steve I sent you. He lives in a very "comfortable" set up.

    Hope this helps,

    /brett

I had my 88 Maine buck done at Yazner's Taxidermist..

He is in Vermont, I found Doug to be a little cheaper than
the well named taxi's on Vt..
I had my buck done for 200.00... Not a bad price and it saved
me about 50 bucks off from any other i checked into,,

I watched him pull the cape off the skull and antlers, It
was great to see how it is done... I haven't heard anything bad
    from anyone about him...

I think i feel another one coming on to be done... Or mabey
my bucks just lonely and wants a partner, No... He wants his *DAD*

Anybody know if Stan Woods in Acton, MA is still in operation? I
went by the other day and didn't see his shingle out. He did a good
job on a couple of ducks for me, but it took the better part of
a year to get them back.

I've taken my birds to Lock, Stock and Barrel, Spencer, Ma.
He is located at the corner of Rt. 9 and Rt 31. He has 6-9pm store
hours so call first. Right now he is about a year- 1 1/2 years behind.
He is one of only ones in central Mass.

You also might chance bringing it to Mass. All Season Sports right
on Rt. 9 in Spencer just west of the court house. The place is only a
couple of years old and they are starting to Taxidermy. All prices are
    competetive.

A friend of mine shot a 8 point buck here in Mass... He tried
to get a taxidermist around the Worcester area and was told he would
have to wait 1 to 1 1/2 years.... I told him i'd bring it to Vermont
and have it done in 9 months.... Sure enough, I dropped it off
and was told by Doug Yazner it would be about 7-9 months..
If anyone has a problem with finding a place to do their mounts
please contact me and we can talk.... I have never heard a complaint
    about Doug's work.....

This taxidermist business sound like it could be a pretty
good part-time or full job. With a 1 1/2 waiting list maybe
a few more would help.. Any idea what it takes to become
    	one???

And There's also Mike Renaud in Winooski, VT. Although I haven't
a mount to show, I've seen lots of his work and it truly is terrific.
He will only do Fur, no fish or birds. It seems he's busy enough with
the fur that he hasn't time for any of the others..
