54.1 | Use a portable stand | NOD::STORM | | Mon Oct 12 1987 13:59 | 12 |
| I'd suggest one of the portable models. I use one and like it.
Not only can you use them where you are not allowed to nail into
trees, but it's easy to move to different stands as conditions
require.
The one I have I ordered as a kit from Cabela's. It's a plywood
base with a metal band that wraps around the tree. I then attacted
a small folding seat so I could sit comfortably.
Happy hunting,
Mark

54.2 | Homemade tree climbers | VICKI::DODIER | | Tue Oct 13 1987 11:03 | 17 |
| The climbing blocks can be made easily with pieces of 2x4 and
some rope. You drill a hole through the side of the block and thread
the rope though. Parachute cord works well and is $3 per 100 feet
at the Army/Navy store in Raymond, N.H.. I've never built them but
I've seen and used them. The piece of cord is about 8-10' long.
You run the cord through the middle of the block, wrap the cord
around the tree a few times and tie it. You may want to run the
cord back through the hole (if possible) as your wrapping it around
the tree. The 2x4 pieces were about 6" long and painted tree bark
color to blend in. See below for rough
drawing. -----

54.3 | Tree stands work | BPOV09::LEAHY | | Tue Oct 13 1987 12:03 | 9 |
| If you hunt various areas I would suggest going with the portable
self climbing stands, usually between $60-100 depending where you
buy it and the type you buy. Things to consider is the weight of
the stand and how far you are going to lug it and how much noise
you make in settting it up and taking down.
The most important thing to remember to buy is the SAFETY
HARNESS, the first step could be a killer.

| Is the ban on nails because of logging in the area ? If so, you
can use screw-in steps, as these are removed when you leave. Or
you can use a rope ladder.
