49.0. "NH hunting accident report - 1986" by LILAC::MKPROJ (REAGAN::ZORE) Thu Oct 08 1987 13:06
This note was entered into the firearms notes file by it's
moderator. I thought it was interesting so I entered it here.
I do have two questions: Does anyone know when the hunter
education requirement was imposed in NH and does anyone know what
the reception of this requirement was by the hunting/shooting
community?

A lengthy report follows. I happened to come across this last night at a
club meeting. I think it was left over from a hunter ed instructors course.
Some of the information is quite interesting. In fact if you look and study
the data you will find that the accident rate has gone down dramatically in
the last few years, mostly because of the hunter education requirement no in
effect here in New Hampshire.

The six member hunting party did have an organized hunting plan and were all
involved in a deer drive at the time. The victim had been one of the drivers

| RE: Hunter Safety Requirement
When I came back up north from N.J. about 4 years ago, I had
to show either a Certificate of Competancy or a previous years
hunting license to get my N.H. license. This may be the requirement
you heard of.
BTW - From what I understand from taking a recent bow hunter
safety course, they no longer issue a Certificate of Competency.
Seems that it presents a legal problem to the issueing party in
the event of an accident as they have certified you as competant.
If you do have an accident and have been certified as competant,
then the group/organization that certified you is apparently legally
responsible due to a poor choice of words.

| Correction the news last night said it
was in east Deering. One brother shot
the other brother as he crossed a stream.
The news said he had no hunter orange on
and white gloves. He was shot in the back
of the head. Identify your game and whats
behind then shoot.

| As of last Saturday besides deer, hunters in Maine have
shot one human, one donkey, and two dogs, and one horse (which was
beleived to be intentional). The animals are sure taken hell this
year. Iam sure the anti's are going to take this and run with it.

Had a friend tell me the other day of a hunter that blasted a guys
dog 'cause it picked up his bird after he downed it. The dog died...
I'm a firm believer in an eye for an eye, so you can guess what I
would've done to *that* jerk....:*|
