47.0. "Scouting report Northwest Mass." by CSMADM::CONROY () Mon Oct 05 1987 10:46

A scouting trip to Northwestern Mass was taken the last Sunday
in September to check out the territory we intend to hunt during
    bow and shotgun season.

The food supply is good. Lots of acorns, the really hot weather
didn't appear to harm the various plants/leaves/trees probably
due to the higher elevation and higher rainfall than we had in the
    East.

Since it took 3 hours to get there and three hours to return,
there wasn't a lot of time for scouting. Two deer were sighted
at a distance of 200 yards on the edge of a field and they simply
stepped back into the bushes and hung around for awhile.

As expected, there wasn't much sign in the usual places that we
hunt in December and the deer were up high and coming down at daybreak
and dusk with a few in the daytime.

The SNOWFALL this weekend will change their patterns quite a bit
if it lasts very long. I imagine even they were surprised to get
blasted with 10" of wet snow the way the weather has been(warm).

Another trip is planned for the weekend after next. We will be
taking a vcr recorder along to capture information on film and we
    can review it numerous times.

If the deer we saw were an example, the herd is in very good physical
shape. The coats were in good condition and they appeared to be
    well fed.

I talked with the people I hunt with in New York this past weekend.
They've been seeing ALOT of deer both at night and during the day.
They went out Friday night for about 45 minutes and counted 47 deer in
the fields around the area. They said that it was split almost
50/50 between does and bucks. In talking with the game management
folks, they indicated that the season may be extended if the harvest
isn't great enough. There afraid that the herd is getting to large.
Can't wait for the season to begin.
