You will see LOTS of deer around Couldersport. I've bow hunted
near there close to the big city (1 stop sign) of Bertville. We
hunted a game management area just north of there. Maps are
available from the Fish and Game Dept. The game management area
is much larger than around here. The one we hunted was about 2
miles wide and 6 miles long.

Last year we had terrible weather the week we hunted. It was windy
as hell and rained off and on all but one day. It even sleeted
on us one day. It was rather frustrating. I sat for 3 days on
game trails in the woods that looked like highways without seeing
a deer. We'd then see 20-30 on side of the road while we drove
the 5 miles back to the room! We finally caught on that the deer
were using the fields to feed in at night and were just bedding
down in the edge of the woods for the day. We eventually got
    several opportunities but didn't collect.

I envy your trip. I decided not to go this year so I could devote
the extra time with my pup looking for birds.

By the way, I hope you are planning to hunt for more than the weekend.
If I remember correctly, there is no hunting on Sundays in Penn.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

First of all....hit the CAPS lock will ya!!!!!!!!!!

Anyways, I have hunted PA. a couple of times. Lots of deer
everywhere you look. Success rate is only 2% though so don't
go down there with the impression you will get a deer. Have
seen deer at all times of the day but our party's best luck
was always in the evening hunts. All in all you will have a
great time down there and see plenty of deer. Spotting at night
is also legal so bring a high powered light and get out and
    	do some spotting..........good luck....Mike
p.s. It is illegal to hunt sundays in PA.
41.3Hunt smart or they'll be smarterTROLL::ASHLEYMon Oct 05 1987 14:0218

I hunted PA extensively while finishing up school (Lehigh).

Do your best to find a good spot near a farm. The deer are
much easier to pattern there. Also, be careful to pick your stand
with shootability in mind as well as deer activity. Most PA deer
won't be caught in the open during the day, so stand in the woods.
The big woods in pa are BIG so patterning is hard, so still hunting
can be good if the conditions permit.

Also, remember that there 300,000+ PA bowhunters and magnitudes
more who use the gun. So any deer old enough to be interesting
will be very SMART. They look up, they sniff constantly, they stamp
    and snort.

Get up as early as you dare, and have a great time dealing with
the smart, wellfed and prolific PA deer.

41.4Hi Bear -- Been a while!MJOVAX::OWENSWho is Gordon Schumway??Fri Nov 06 1987 11:2814
I live in Pa. and work in the Harrisburg office. Most of the
previous notes pretty well reflect hunting in Pa. However if you
come down for rifle season DON'T GO SPOTTING! It is illegal to
spot in season this year. (new law) and there are heavy fines for
spotlighting a house or spotting after midnight so watch your manners.
Also new regulations this year requiring flourescent orange. The
new law, I believe, is 250 sq.inches which means a cap no longer
    fills the requirements.
I am a member of a camp that is located just outside of State
College Pa in the Black Moshannon State Park. Good hunting for
Deer, Bear, Grouse, and Turkey. My 15yr. old son got a 4 pt. last
year and we all got doe.

BTW: I think you're refering to Coudersport not Couldersport
41.5Is this really larry owens?CUERVO::GATHFri Nov 06 1987 13:489

Thanks for keeping us updated on some of the new laws in the
keystone state. I'm still trying to remeber your first name.
Since you didn't sign your note and my neighbors name is also
owens I am having a mental block. Its been purhaps 15 years
since I last talked to you.
I still get in touch with some of my pa. brothern.

I'm planning a hunt in the Delaware water gap this fall, and was
wondering if any of you have had the opprotunity to hunt there?
I'm also looking for an address for the Penn F&G dept so I can write
and ask for a copy of their abstracts. If anyone has it I'd appreciate
it if you could give it to me. Thnaks in advance.
