Thought I'd create a note where folks could review information on shooting preserves, guides, and anything else along these lines. So anyone who has had an experience with a preserve or guiding service that they would like to pass on, this is the place to do it.

In the boston area we are fortunate to have one of the nicest hunting preserves around. If you don't want to be hastled with finding land to hunt on or if you want a private place to teach your son how to handle guns properly or if you just want to exteend your hunting season I highly recomend Addiville R.I. tel 401-568-3185 The season starts around sept 1 and runs to april 15 if the birds hold out Geoff also has a new sporting clay course for those who want to sharpen up there bird shooting skills before the season. He also has a fish club where you can fish for some of the trout on the farm.... It is a really nice place and I only wished I lived closer.

Has any of you avid hunters out there ever been to TIOGA, or BLACK BOAR HUNTING LODGES? I was hoping someone could give me some info on how these people operate? Do you just walk into a pen and there there waiting for you or is there some skill involved? I was thinking of booking a trip but not if it's like hunting at the zoo. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Mike M
21.5 | A little info on TIOGA Park... | SHOOTR::AHO | Uncle Mike | Fri Jan 29 1988 15:45 | 15 |
I talked to a guy that has been there and he said DON'T GO!! It's just like you said, shooting them in a pen. However I have heard SUPER Reports of the place (Wildhill Preserve in ELY, VT), I think that's correct anyway... It's expensive ($450.00 + for boar, but worth every penny from what I've heard. The above is in reference to Tioga Park. I don't know anything about Black Boar Hunting Lodges. At Wildhill you can hunt over bait or with dogs. Using dogs is VERY challenging (like shooting rabbits on the run).. ~Mike~

21.7 | New England guide recommendations? | BOSTON::HICKS | I'm the NRA | Sat Apr 27 1991 00:09 | 22 |
New England hunters: I would very much appreciate your recommendations for a guide. I would like a professional guide for one or two days hunting coyotes in NH, Maine or even Mass. (if such a person exists.) I'm leary of answering ads in Outdoor Life or American Hunter. I'd much rather start with a personal recommendation from anyone here. So if you know of a good guide yourself or second hand that will handle a coyote hunt, please reply here or drop me a line: Tim Hicks dtn 224-1657 home: 508-285-5371 e-mail: HXTRIX::HICKS Even if you know of a good guide but are not sure if he handles coyotes, by all means, let me know! Any and all help gladly appreciated. <<< Tim >>>
21.8 | Perley Eastman, licensed guide, Ashland, Maine | PENUTS::BCABRAL | Tue Nov 19 1991 08:07 | 50
I'd like to add a recommendation for a guide in Northern Maine (Ashland, to be specific). This man seems to specialize in black bear hunts over bait, but does deer, ice fishing, moose, river canoeing, and probably many more. For the last two trips, we've rented his "river camp" which is right on the Machias river, about 40 minutes outside of Ashland. First year, I shot a 9 point, 160 lb (dressed) buck out of this area, and this year I didn't get to be in the right spot at the right time. Plenty of open and unposted property with the whole array of areas (swampy, hardwood, ridges, tote roads, etc, etc.) He also has built a brand new lodge and cabins for groups of up to 5 people in each cabin. This place is *gorgeous*, with all the modern wants/desires. The one drawback to the lodge is that the closest hunting areas that would be most productive are paper owned land, where the paper companies charge a road use fee. The spot we hunted, where there were no fees was about a 40 minute drive away. He quoted us a fee of $35.oo per man per day to stay at the lodge, which included meals. We were invited over one night as his guests, and were quite impressed with the place. Meals are served family style, and are plain, but hearty, filling, and homemade. Expect to be eating game when you stay there. For the price, You can't touch it. The out camp on the river is set up with a propane stove and lights, wood stove, carried-in water, and an outhouse. He provides all the wood you need, and will refill the water jug as needed. We found it easier to go to his place and refill when we ran low. The cost for the river camp was $125 per person for the week, max of 4 people. I've found Perley to be honest, and will provide needs at a very reasonable price. He dosn't have much to say, and will stay out of your way if you know what you're doing. He's also a wealth of information when he's queried, and I'd imagine if you hired him as a guide, rather than simply a "landlord" such as we have, that you'd come back knowing a hell of a lot more than you did going up. I found it refreshing that when we arrived, he didn't want to take our money right away. He just said "you boys just go get set up and scout around a bit before dark... I'll be down for a visit later on" Fact was, we didn't end up paying until the night before we left. Then again, we were repeat customers. So if you're in the market for a licensed guide, hunting accomodations, lodging, canoeing, ice fishing, etc, try him out. PERLEY EASTMAN, JR. 21.9 | Yep he's tops | SALEM::TOWLE_C | Corky | Thu Nov 21 1991 09:37 | 16 |
RE: .8 Bob said it well. I spent the week up there also as a first timer and have to agree that Perley and his accomodations are *tops*. The only thing that was better than the cabin we stayed in and the excellent hunting was Cabrals cooking.. :-) Am looking forward to next year already! BTW, Perley might be getting into renting out for snow machine parties also so if you're interested in that at all it might be worth a call to him. There are literally hundreds of miles of skidooable roads up there! Corky |
