18.0. "Any Maine Hunters Out There?" by TSE::LEFEBVRE (The weather's here, wish you were fine) Thu Sep 10 1987 08:52

Does anyone else hunt the great state of Maine? I hunt the Moosehead
Lake area, near the Moose River and the East and West outlets of the
Kennebec Rivers. I also do alot of hunting near Seboomok Lake north
of Moosehead Lake. My father and I stay at Wilson's Campgrounds
at the mouth of the East outlet.

Typically, we see 8-10 moose, 3-6 deer and possibly a black bear
or two in a week of hunting. Lots of ruffed grouse in the area,
as well. A couple of years ago, my father saw a mink drinking near
a river bed. The most unusual creature I have seen in Maine is
    a fisher.

Heading up to Moosehead the week of November 15. 9 weeks and
    counting...

18.1grouse and deer in MaineCSSE::PETERSENThu Sep 10 1987 11:1517
    Mark,

I bought a Gazeteer (sp?) for the state of Maine this past summer,
I don't know Maine (the woods) that well yet, but I am interested
    in exploring it this fall.

Can you give me some general locations on where to hunt for grouse
and deer, (well, I guess deer are everywhere in Maine!)

I will be camping overnight as well, so if you can recommend anything
near a campground it would be helpful.

Also, can you give me the opening dates for grouse and deer?

    Thanks alot.

    Erik
18.2TSE::LEFEBVREWeather's here, wish you were fineThu Sep 10 1987 13:1420
Concerning the dates, I'll check a back issue of The Maine Sportsman
magazine and enter them at that time.

The only area of Maine that I've deer hunted is the greater Moosehead
lake area, specifically the areas west and north of the lake. If
you're planning just an overnight, I suggest York county, which
is immediately over the NH border. I don't have any information
about campgrounds, but you may want to put an inquiry in the MAINE
    notes conference (UCOUNT::MAINE).

The Moosehead Lake Region is networked by literally hundreds of
miles of dirt roads, tote roads and old logging roads. This offers
excellent grouse cover as well as good shooting. I recommend a
    dog for flushing.

Ruffed grouse are fair game, however, spruce grouse are protected.
You may want to learn the differences before hunting. A spruce
grouse will often sit in a tree without flushing.

    HUNTERS IN MAINE
I hunt the great state of Maine(since 1975). Had some luck in
    thepast(1975, 400+ lb bear, 7 ft 6 inches), a doe and a small buckaroo
in later years. That was in southern/central Maine. Now I hunt in
the Western Mts along the NH border(Upton/Newry area). This year
I'll be hunting the border(NH/ME) for olde mossy horns. That aren't
much deer, but what is there is BIG! Also do some bird hunting
for Mr. Grouse. Will be scouting up there by the end of the month
and making plans for olde mossy horns and maybe another bear. This
will be the first time deer hunting in NH. Usually I do Mass and
Maine as a rule. Also, heading up to New Brunswick for a week.

                                           happy hunting,

                                            Lee(Bwana)

Hi, I use to hunt Maine alot when I lived up there. Alot of real
nice country. You hit the nail on the head when you said that up
north the deer aren't as numerous but the ones that are there are
real wall hangers. That 400lb+ bear is a real monster. Most of
the bear I've heard of being killed in Maine were around 200. Anything
over 300 is considured big. Now I do most of my deer hunting in
NY state. I'm amazed at the number of animals you see. Hopefully
I'll start hunting Maine again real soon. Good luck looking for
    the "Big One".

18.5Open land and Grouse in the ALLAGASHASGNQH::WAINRIGHTFri Oct 02 1987 00:3715
Couple of friends from CT. and I go up to the ALLAGASH country for
a week annually for partridge. Great place to visit, the birds are
usually there and the best part is that the land is open. The only
NO Hunting signs seen are right along the wilderness waterway and
that is really just for moose.

We stay at Roy Gardner's Sporting camps right on the St. John.
This year it is $12 per night per person.

Leaving Sunday, stop at Beans and then go...It's about 430 miles
and takes about 10 hours with stops.

Seen a few deer over the years, moose and bear.

Going to try Northern NH this year...
18.6I'm gettin readyNETWRK::GSMITHTue Oct 27 1987 12:2625
Well... it looks like I will be going to Maine this year also.
I have hunted there a few times, around Moosehead, Greenville, and
a town called Endfield, which is near Bangor. This year I will be
going waaaaay up there in the ALLOGASH.

I have been trying to decide if I should go or not for about two
months. My brothers and another couple of guys reserved the cabin
a while ago. I have hunted deer for about 10+ years, and NEVER have
had to 'decide' if I am going or not. This year I have several things
going on in the family... which made me think about it. Well, the
other day my wife said "why don't you just go and forget the problems"!
That's all it took.... I am going.

Anyone ever hunted the ALLOGASH before. I am preparing VERY carefully
as I hear it is very rough country. It's about 8 hours from here
    (Boston).

BTW... if anyone else who doesn't have plans... and wants to join
us.. there is room for two more... give me a mail message..
JUNIOR::GSMITH The cabin is one of three in a cluster. The other
two will be occupied by parties who have been going for MANY years,
so we will be able to get introduced to the area on Sunday. We will
    be leaving Saturday, Nov. 14th.

Good luck up at the Allagash. You'll have a great time, no doubt.
Tom Davis and I (both from Tewksbury) will be heading up with my
dad the week of the 16th. We stay at Wilson's in between Greenville
and Rockwood on the west side of Moosehead lake. We usually hunt
a couple of days up at Seboomok Lake (about 15-20 miles north of
Moosehead). The rest of the week will probably be spent hunting
the Kennebec River basin, Indian Lake and Squaw Mountain.

Provisions (in addition to the usual) I bring:

    - Topo maps (an absolute must to carry at all times)
    - At least 2 compasses (and a working knowledge or how to use them
to get out of the woods - no real landmarks in that area)
    - Sorel type boots with extra felts
    - Wool pants and coat (quiet and stays warm when wet)

Remember to bring clothing or any weather conditions. In the past
I've hunted Northern Maine in snow storms, torrential rain, 70+
degrees, 5-10 degrees, and possibly all of these conditions in the
    same week.

    Hope you get lucky.
