6.0. "Huntable Land in East Mass?" by TROLL::ASHLEY () Wed Sep 02 1987 17:59

    		I'm interested in finding a place to bowhunt in eastern
    Mass. (I work at Hudson) Does anyone know of any good (or bad)
    areas? Also, I could use some advice on approaching landowners.
    Do large deer populations affect orchards adversely?

    	Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Peter.

    Peter,

    As far as approaching landowners I'd say I have had very good luck.
    When you approach any landowner be as polite as you can, tell them
    that you're not there to fill the sky with lead, but to get yourself
    a deer, and you would appreciate their cooperation. If the landowner
    seems a bit reluctant try offering a venison steak or two to him
    if you do bag one. Politeness is the biggest key, along with leaving
    the land the way you found it-clean.

    In reference to deer damage to orchards, I can attest that they
    can do quite a bit of damage if there are too many of them. You
    see, the deer like to eat the tips of the branches on the trees.
     If a tree is left to the deer, it eventually will not produce any
    decent fruit and will have nothing but small spear-like branches.

    At the orchard that my mother and step-father have, we try to keep
    the deer population down but not out. Of course, they are smart
    enough to be able to ellude us quite effectively.

    Crafty little beggers, those deer.

6.3PLACES TO HUNT DEERISWISS::MCFARLANDWed Sep 23 1987 13:328

    I AM LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO HUNT DEER (BOW AND SHOTGUN) SOMEWHERE
    BETWEEN CONCORD AND JUST EAST OF THE BIRKSHIRES. TRAVELING BETWEEN
    D.E.C. SITES I NOTICED SEVERAL APPLE ORCHARDS
    ALONG RT117 (I JUST STARTED WORKING IN MAYNARD). COULD ANYONE RECOMMEND
    SPECIFIC AREAS INCLUDING NAMES OF PERSON(S) TO CONTACT IF PERMISSION
    TO HUNT IS REQUIRED?

    Here's a trick I learned on how to get permission to around small
    towns. Worked pretty good. We did this in Missouri and Iowa.

    Go to the area you wish to hunt before season, get there on a Staurday
    and hang around the town. On Sunday morning go to the local church
    services and be recognize as a vistor. After services most everyone
    stops to say hello and to find out who you are. That's when you
    make your pitch on trying to find land to hunt on.

    One year we lined up 3 different locations to hunt, in one town,
    by doing this.

    Bowhunting - Try the Groton Town Forest....Lot's of land....Plenty
    of food & water...Easy access to all parts of the woods on dirt
    roads....I've been hunting Groton for the past 5 years and have
    seen some nice size deer come out of the woods....Can't wait till
    opening day cause that's where you'll find me......Give the town
    forest in Groton a shot.....

    May your arrows fly straight and true....

6.6Bolton flats closed maybe?LUDWIG::BINGWed Aug 30 1995 14:318

    I was driving by the Bolton Flats WMA yesterday and my wife said she
    saw a sign saying "No hunting allowed in Bolton". Does anyone have
    any info on this? Is it something new? The WMA sign is still up on
    110 so I'm wondering what's going on. It's going to be hard to hunt
    the "Bolton" flats if hunting is banned in that town.
