| I read the article. It said that Boars weren't protected so there
is no closed season. The Boars are hold overs from a game preserve
back in the 1920's, so I doubt there are very many of them roaming
around.
Good luck,
Mark

Interesting note Bear... As I have hunted them before, they
are a wiley creature. However last year (1986) during the deer
hunting season there were 28 shot....
Seems like there are a "few" still out there...

4.3 | Hawaii | CIMNET::GAFFNEY | | Thu Sep 03 1987 08:32 | 7 |
| I hunted wild pig on the Big Island of Hawaii. It was sort of
like a Rambo deal. Heavy undergrowth to say the least. Dogs
were also a big help, but got plenty cut up. Had to bring a
needle and thread for field stitching. Some of the best wild
game I've ever eaten. I had one particular friend who used to
take them with a knife. Talk about you know what!!!!!! He had em.

| I've never hunted wild boar, but from that articles I've read
about hunting them with a handgun, the recommendation is to use
the biggest caliber that you can handle. You should also be sure
that you're quite good with it, since boars seldom go down with
one shot. One article said that the only gun that proved a reliable
stopper on boar in a particular hunt, was the .454 Cassul (sp?).
Don't misunderstand, I own a .41 mag and love it, and it
will take boar if you can place two or three shots properly,
but these animals are extremely dangerous, and you shouldn't
take them on with anything that you don't have complete confidence
in, or haven't completely mastered.

Does anyone have any information about the current state of Boar
hunting in New Hampshire?
In particular:
1. Where exactly are they suppose to be? I have heard about some
escaping a game perserver during an early 1900's hurricane. Does
anyone have any particulars as to where this is at.
2. Are they plentiful? I have heard everything from there are a few
to rumors of them overtaking New Hampshire.
3. If anyone has hunted, or seen, them in the New Hampshire woods,
what type of habitat do they seem to prefer?
Any other information anyone could offer that could help me and my
Super Redhawk .44 Magnum to come face to face with some of these boars
would be greatly appreciated.

Heard they are predominately in the western part of the state, I heard
the same game preserve story too, must of been in this file before.
Wouldn't mind plugging a porker either, can any of the southern
hospitality fill us in as to the flavour of one of these wild oinkers.
(read: are they tasty?)

4.8 | Special hunt because of crop damage... | SNAX::ERICKSON | What? Me Worry! | Wed Jan 22 1992 17:08 | 7 |

A friend of mine was telling me about this today. He said
that during the last hurricane. A game preserve or something like
that. Sustained heavy damage and a lot of wild boars escaped. These
boars are now causing crop damage. They are thinking about having
a special hunt. He told me it was going to be bows only. Will post
more details if I hear anything.

The wild boar escaped form a private hunting preserve in southwestern
N.H. during the hurricane of 1938. For a while there was decent boar
hunting in the area but it seems to have fallen off over the last
twenty+ years. A call to the NH Fish and Wildlife should answer any
questions.

If anyone is in or around the Worcester area, stop in The Outdoorsman.
One of the employees shot a "large" boar in NH and has the mount
hanging on the wall. Very impressive.

re: last few...
The name of the park is Corbin Park located in Croydon, Grantham,
and a few other towns....
Not only did Wild Boars escape during the Hurricane, they still
escape to this day !! I was told that 26 boars were shot last
year in the towns surrounding the park... There is no closed season
on boar and no limit, but I've been told that the best time
to hunt them is during the winter when snow is on the ground
to better follow their tracks... You do need a hunting license
to hunt them though. I haven't seen one yet but I've followed
their tracks and do they motivate!!
Have fun !!

I have been heunting the last 2 weekends in Newport, just outside
Corbin Park, a few hundred yards from the fence. From the looks
of the fence, I'm not surprised that the pigs escape quite
regularly. I haven't seen any holes, but I wouldn't doubt that
they could happen. The fence is a mixture of chicken wire,
stockade fence, chain link, barbed wire, etc., sometimes a few
layers thick where they have done patching. I saw tracks where a
coon wiggled through a grating over a brook outlet.
The area is kind of crowded, I ran into maybe 8 or 10 hunters
during the 2 days I hunted, but we covered a lot of ground just
getting used to the place. Late Sunday morning, we ran across
some tracks that were just covered with the early morning's snow,
so I know they were in the area. The people I talked to said
they were seeing tracks in the swamp, but we saw them near the
top of a hill. I guess they do move alot.
I heard they took one last week, and 4 or 5 two weeks ago over a
couple of days. I've also heard, that with a special permit, you
can bait them and hunt them at night with spot lights. I guess
some farmers in the area will help you out with that. I think
you'd have to be pretty friendly with someone for that though.
I met someone near home who has worked in the park recently, and
says there are some inside that are nearly domestic, living right
under a barn near the main entrance. I guess that will happen
with any animal that is getting crowded and sees friendly people
all the time. But I imagine there are plenty of others willing
to make the hunt a good time.

| Just a note from an old land owner..
If you want to hunt my land ASK ME, but not on opening day. I am a
person I have a family. Come and visit me once in a while, and always
ask if there is anything you can help with. I have been hunting
private land for years. Make friends first It pays, besides you can
never have enough friends. I hunt land in Utah where the owner only
lets me hunt, Just because I call once in a while and stop to see him
when I am the area. Think about it... In california we have wild
pigs. I have taken four, the last time I was under a bunch of shin
tangle to run the pigs out for the rest of the gang. I came face to
face with a rather mad pig. Hot loads in the 357 mag work but If you
find yourself in this position, you will have to clean your shorts!
Advice:
Be at the hunting area early 04:00 or so, this is so your
sent will be faded when the pig are moving.
Hunt over water pigs drink a lot but mostly at night....
Dont move at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have seen pigs shy away from guys half a mile away.
Pigs are one of the smartest animals on Earth, dont be
Stupid.. Use coverscents and camo every thing you own, If
I could find camo contacts I would wear them!
When you look for them look for where they have been, they
tend to keep in an area for a while, Its easyer.
A pig will run like hell, he's smart and knowns what you
want dont chase him. Let others run them to YOU.
This will improve your chances of getting a Pig...

4.17 | yes there are boar | NETRIX::"[email protected]" | david g | Fri Jul 07 1995 11:59 | 8 |
| Bear: there are boar in N.H. They are up in the CLaremont/Newport area on the southern end of the large private estate in Grantham (which is fenced off). They are
they are big, very big and very tough to kill, but very good eating. I understand that there is NO season or limit. At least that is what
the last game warden said some years back. They are up there though I know a guy who has been chasing them with a
bow for some years. They are skittish, smart and excellent senses. They will band together to protect young and there are few animals as
tenacious and dangerous when angered or protecting young. A 12 guage with slugs is good but nothing is great if they chaarge.
Anyway, good luck. Regards,
dlg
