| Still chugging along.
Not powder coating the frame yet was a good idea. Since repainting the frame I
have had to add three new brackets to hold various things on. The rolling chasis
is now complete though. The new body is mounted and just needs paint. Motor work
has begun. You find out rather quickly how little you know when you begin to
build a race motorcycle engine. Still I am progressing nicely. I would guess
another month to a month and a half and everything will be complete. If I can I
would love to throw the finished product on a dyno to do some initial set up and
tuning, but unless my brutalized budget recovers I don't know if I can afford
it.
Later,,,

Low 11's , high 10's would be nice...

113.47 | closer | MDS002::FRASER | | Tue Mar 04 1997 16:25 | 18 |
| Closer and closer to being completed. The bike itself, other then paint is done.
The engine lower end is together and the head is done. The only hangup at this
point is pistons. I received an 1135cc set, had my jugs bored and honed and then
started to assemble everything. 70 thou deck height clued me in to the fact that
something was not correct. KZ "blocks" (cylinders) can not be "decked". You
adjust deck height with the base gasket. Gaskets range from .005 to .020.
.070 was WAY out of the ball park. Turns out I was sent KZ1000 pistons, not
KZ1000J. The difference being .050 piston pin to crown distance. New slugs are
on their way this week. Another two weeks possibly to completion.
On the off chance the KZ isn't done in time, I'm going to pick up an
extra chain and sprockets for my CBR1000, just in case I need to gear it down
and run it for the first couple races.
Rich's 50-60 race schedule has inspired me to having dilusions of
running for points in both Pueblo and Denver. I might give it a try and see how
it goes. 3.5 weeks to the first T&T. 4 week to the first race...

| sounds good Brian ---
BTW if we run this weekend it'll make the fourth outing this season to
date :^) We might get rained out again though. I'm going to bust last
years race count :^) So go for Pueblo and Denver - heck our race time
is so limited, we've got to do it while we can I hear that after 65 it
gets iffy' :^)

| Hi,
Yuo won't have to hit more races just to keep your record safe. If I ran Friday,
Saturday and Sunday here, the best I could hope for would be 30-35 races. I
probably won't make more than 20.

113.50 | #@$%!#$!! | MDS002::FRASER | | Thu Mar 20 1997 15:16 | 35 |
| Don't know if I wined about this enough yet... (-:
Slight 4-5 week delay on putting my motor together. The deal went like this;
- Ordered 1135cc KZ1000J pistons.
- Received pistons
- had jugs bored and honed to fit
- started dry assembly to measure the parts
- discovered .070 deck height (this is not right)
- after much run around and many phone calls found out I have KZ1000 pistons
not KZ1000 "J" (the difference is .060 pin to crown on the piston)
- sent back wrong slugs
- received new pistons
- measured skirt dia. right = 2.91" these mesure 2.87"
.042 piston to cylinder just isn't going to work real well
@#$%&#!!
6-8 weeks to have new J pistons custom made to fit my bores.
&*%$#@!!!
The best solution I could come up with is to order a new set of 1166cc slugs
and re-bore and hone my cylinders. 3-4 weeks for the 1166 pistons. The shop
who sent the wrong parts also agreed to do the bore and hone free. No S#!t...
The good part is , because I've blown the first few races anyway, I'll be less
pressured to get it together and can make sure all is correct before I run it
hard. I'll run my CBR1000 for the first few and only run the KZ when it is 100%.
The moral to the story is " Always have a backup plan."
1st T&T one week from saturday !!!

113.51 | Closer and closer | MDS002::FRASER | | Tue Apr 08 1997 12:53 | 12 |
| Hi,
Ran Sunday on the CBR1000 down in Pueblo. 12.180 @ 114 best for the day.
Not too bad for a stock, slow pig, street bike. Lost 2nd round due to brain
fade and a 646 light. I don't like running the CBR at all. It is just too heavy
getting it off the line. Also I'm too used to the two step on the Kawi.
It is much easier to be consistant off the line when you know exactly what RPM
you're at every time....
Anyway, the 1166 Kawi pistons came in last night. I'll run them and the
jugs up to Denver tomorrow. Hopefully I can have them back, bored and honed, for
the weekend. It may actually run someday...

113.53 | Honda racein | MDS002::FRASER | | Mon Apr 21 1997 09:55 | 17 |
| Hi,
Well the first two points races in Pueblo are in the books, and racing on my
Honda is not exactly striking fear into the hearts of my competitors. (-:
The honda is heavy. Damn heavy. It probably has 200 to 250 pounds on my Kawi.
The Honda doesn't exactly leap off the line. 2.1-2.0 60 foot times arn't real
zippy. That was my biggest problem. (besides lack of seat time on the honda)
My reaction times just plain S#CKED. I havn't managed to win a round honestly
yet this year. (a bye doesn't count). Hopfully I've gotten the "first round
duck" syndrome out of my system down in Pueblo. Denver's first race is this
Friday. The IDBA national event is May 3-4.
I NEED MY KAWI BACK !!!!
Ok I've wined enough... (-:

113.54 | The Kawi lives !!! almost... | MDS002::FRASER | | Mon May 12 1997 12:45 | 14 |
| Hi,
Put the Kawi back together using the stock head and cams. 1135cc 11:1 basiclly
just one notch up from stock. Sorta... Babied it done the track for the first
run. Gentle launch, 6K shifts 12.01 @109 Second run, harder launch, sideways up
in smoke, idled the rest of the way down the track for a 15.5. Third run, some
wheel spin, no air shifter after 2nd. Hit the rev limiter by not going into
third. 8K manual shifts the rest of the way. Backing of the throttle to shift
woose run ending up with 11.74 @115.
Once everything is working and I fix the two oil leaks this puppy is
going to run low 11's with the stock heads, and 10's with the good head and
cams. 1.8 60 footers so far and 7.5 sec 1/8 mile. With the stock heads and cams
the bottom end is amazing.

113.57 | Sunday | MDS002::FRASER | | Mon Jun 02 1997 09:48 | 14 |
| My son and I took the bikes down to Pueblo Sunday. He is still poor and doesn't
have his own street bike yet so I let him ride the "El porko Delux" Honda and
I was on the now slightly faster Kawi. The two bikes used to run almost side by
side. Not anymore. The green machine was flying !!! Best run 11.264 @ 117.
I am re-learning how to get it off the line. It takes a few runs to figure out
what a new type tire will do and I think I am getting a handle on this Dunlop.
60 foot times were in the 1.68 range and my worst run all day was a 11.32.
At this point, I think I'll leave it alone for another two weeks. I have
races in Denver for the next two Fridays, and then a month break .(In Denver)
I'll change out the head then and use Pueblo for testing and tuning.
It was a rocky start,,, but Damn this is fun again !!!
