1270.1 | Split or Spit? | DELNI::BRENNAN | | Thu Feb 20 1997 13:05 | 21 |
| Bob,
do you mean splitfire plugs? If it's actually spitfire I guess your
engine is supposed spit and sputter! 8^)
Count this as a YES vote - worth every penny!
I put splitfires in my "69" MERC 650 outboard and it purrs like a kitten.
Prior to installation I would stall every 10 minutes when negotiating
at no wake speed and have to throttle up in neutral to clean off my
NGK's, which I like as plugs. When I installed the Splitfires the MERC
ran much quieter, smoother and like a tiger! I never stall at no wake
speed anymore and I credit the splitfires for the improvement.
When I put them in my 86 Buick, my emissions output (CO2/Hydrocarbons)
plummeted. I love those plugs! Definately worth a try.
Good Luck,
Tom

| Oh,
the gap for the splitfires may differ from the OEM Gap/Recommended
plug. So call your marina and check before assuming. This was the case
for my 74 F100 and 86 Buick T-Type.

1270.3 | splitfires?????? | FABSIX::J_KASPER | | Thu Feb 20 1997 17:40 | 28 |
| If you have a omc that has an electronic ingnition be carefull,
splitfires have been known to interfere with the ingnitions.
[Plugs misfiring]
The 69 merc previously mentioned has a magneto or point ingition
and could benifit from such a change. The correct thing to do in
my opinion is to change the fuel/oil mixture.
You are probably mixing 50:1, If you are running a small engine
and are trolling alot change it to 75:1. ( two stroke engines
at idle to about 2000 rpm need only 100:1 to 75:1 fuel/oil mixture).
NGK sells a v groove plug you may want to try if they carry it in
your heat range. You may want to go to a hotter plug first, say two
heat ranges hotter. The marina's usually carry splitfires for marine
engines so you can get the propper plug info from them.
As far as them bieng a wonder plug, I have my doubts. Spark plugs
Are the end of the ingition system what goes into them usually is
the real issue,(cheap oil, weak coils, bad plug wires, bad fuel,
Poor timing of ingiton, improper heat range of spark plugs).
Old engines usually need all the help they can get when they stalls alot
at idle there are other things at work ,( low compression, egg shaped
pistons or egg shaped cylinders - back pressure at idle over comes the
exhaust[potato in tail pipe syndrone] Especially on the old MERCS!!!!!
HOPE THIS GIVE YOU ALITTLE MORE INFO.

1270.4 | if you're using UL77's | BOOKIE::HEBERT | Captain Bligh | Fri Feb 21 1997 09:41 | 5 |
| AFter going through three sets of UL77V plus per season for a couple of
years in my Johnson I switched over to QL16V Champions. My starting was
easier, trolling was much smoother, and they lasted all season.

I run them in in my Harley and love them. I believe the parent company
is Champion and before coming out as their own label Harley sold them
as Screamin Eagle performance plugs and still does actually. I did buy
a set for my Chevy 350 Blazer and they turned out to be the same
listing for a 1340 EVO so my friends bought me out before installing
them in the truck.

Trailer Boats just this month did a test on splitfire plugs.
They caused a performance DECREASE. Well documented article.
My own personal experience with them is they look extremly cheaply
made. I lost a full second at the dragstrip with splitfires
on my V-MAX because they would not let the engine rev past 8k RPM.
as always...YMMV.
