1241.0. "Building a Hydroplane" by KAHALA::SUTER (and now for something you'll really like!) Wed Sep 20 1995 12:28

	I've been entertaining the thought of building a small
hydroplane, just as a toy. I don't know the classes well enough
to describe what I envision by class. But it would be a
8-10-12 (maybe 13.1 so it's not a "Skicraft" in NH) foot boat
styled after a "real" one riding on sponsons with the driver
area actually off the water, suspended by the two sponsons when
under power. I envision it powered by a small outboard.

	Any thoughts on beginning such a venture? Good books on the
topic? Plans? Pitfalls?

thanks,

Rick

1241.1sounds like funPENUTS::DSULLIVANWed Sep 20 1995 13:4311
 I did some reading on this a while back. The only major thing I got
 out of it was....

 Take the amount of work you think you need to do and multiply it by 3.
 Take the amount of money you think you need and multuply it by 5.

 Although alot of fun, a friend of mine used to have one,,, required alot
 of time and money to keep it screaming-- it was apprx 17ft...

 If you decide to do it... keep us posted.

	RE .1

	   Why don't you take him for a ride in your sled and see if he
	likes the speed??? He's used to those ski type boats... You know,
	great holeshot, flat wake, no real speed.... 8^)

	   Just being an instigator... I thought that everyone who likes
	powerboats has thought of building a hydro!!!

	   Is it Rick Wilson who has a small one?

1241.3Go for it.STAR::KENNEYWed Sep 20 1995 14:349

    	I believe Rick picked up one back while he was still at DEC. If
    you are not interested in racing, just a toy call Glen-L in California
    they sell plans for one that is just what you describe. Takes like 2
    sheets of plywood and some epoxy and away you go. Add controls and a
    10 Hp motor and you are in business.

1241.4Just saw one, but...FOUNDR::DODIERSingle Income, Clan'o KidsWed Sep 20 1995 15:385
    	Damn, I just saw one for sale and I can't remember where I saw it.
    It was a traditional "mushroom shaped" hydroplane. Unless you want to
    build one, it may be cheaper to just buy one and see if you like it.

 Just add 10hp?

 Geez I would at least hope for one of them alchohol burning 100 specials.
 I thought the whole point of a hydroplane was to have your eyes watering
 at all times// at idle from the alchohol or methane and while running from
 the high speeds peeling the goggles off your face...

 Now your getting my interests sparked!

1241.6Ahhhh, yup, you might be right... Let me think about it for a while...SUBPAC::CRONINThu Sep 21 1995 09:017
	RE: BC--> You are rather simple...

	Thanks Woody,
			That's why we sometimes fish together, right?
	Because we're a good match... Well, I'm a smaller size, but
	other than that...
