1239.0. "Trip to southern Maine - any suggestions?" by IMOKAY::cummings (Paul T. Cummings) Mon Aug 21 1995 14:19

I'm planning a trip to Maine from Salisbury MA, on the Merrimack River,
over Labor Day weekend in our 27' SeaRay.

I'm currently planning to travel to Kennebunkport and to stay there
two nights. But I must admit my choice of destination is more from
ignorance than careful consideration. I don't know where to go in
this area and I have visited Kennebunk by land and found it likable.

Can anyone suggest alternate harbors for 1 or both nights? Or can
anyone confirm that Kennebunkport is just the place to go for a couple
with an 8 month old child (we aren't looking for wild nightlife, we
are looking for a nice place to get away for a couple days). Can
anyone recommend a paritcular marina in Kennebunkport?

Please focus your suggestions to spots within 30 miles of Kennebunkport
since this looks like just about the right distance for us.

Thanks,
paul

The marina that I usually stay at in Kennebunkport is the
Yachtsman. This Marina also has a motel if you get tired of staying
on your boat. This marina is within easy walk to the town stores and
shops. (Note: This the same marina George Bush keeps his boat at)

1239.2Kennebunk Yacht Club and Marina (KYC)UNIFIX::FRENCHBill French 381-1859Mon Aug 28 1995 11:099
I have stayed at the Kennebunk Yacht Club and Marina. It's between
The Yachtsman and Chicks Marina ($). The 3 of them are all adjacent.

Have good charts for the Kennebunk River and its mouth. Very shallow
river and there are rocks around the mouth that you have to navigate
carefully. KYC had better prices than Chicks. I was there 3 and 4
    years ago.

Thanks for the help. This AM I made reservations at Chicks (before
reading the previous note). Two night minimum, $1.75/foot. They are
having a cookout and band play on Sunday night. Sounds like fun.

Now another question. While looking at my charts this w/e, I noticed
a cove just north (a couple of miles) of Porpoise Cove (which is just
north of Kennebunkport). I can't remember the name now but it looked
like a quiet spot to drop an anchor. It didn't look like there was
any marina facilities there. Can anyone confirm or deny my
suspicions? I'll try to get the name of the cove tonight.

re .3:

Is the cove you are referring to any chance the one at Richmond Island?
This is more than a couple of miles east of Cape Porpoise as I recall,
though. Depending on the wind direction, it is possible to anchor on
either side of the breakwater at Richmond Island. I've spent several
night on the north side.

1239.5Stage Island Harbor is the name of the placeIMOKAY::cummingsPaul T. CummingsWed Aug 30 1995 14:106
The name of the harbor is Stage Island Harbor. I'll be it is less
than 2 miles north of Cape Propoise harbor. Chicks made us commit to
2 nights so I probably won't get there. But if I do I'll report here.

We went to Stage Island Harbor on Saturday "on the way" to
Kennebunkport, even though we had to back track a little as a result
of going there. It is just around the corner from Cape Porpoise.

It is a nice little spot. A mile or two around at most. Houses and
rocks line the harbor. No visible marina's or facilities but it
looked to be a nice quiet spot to drop a hook for an overnight stay.
We achored in sand in 9 foot depth for lunch before we went to Chicks.
I recorded a some loran #'s on the way in. Let me know if you want
them.

BTW, the Kennebunk port trip was excellent. Chicks put on an end of
summer BBQ (included). Gave out hats to each boat. Cost was
$1.75/foot, included electric (which some places have the gall to
charge extra for). I'd recommend them, not fancy but nice, and they
try hard.

Next weekend we plan to try York Harbor - any recommendations?
